IBS Flare related to Eating Difficulties and Joint Pain

So...for the last 10 days I've been what I call "flaring"...IBS symptoms are the worst I've experienced in a long time, joints are inflamed and swollen, left knee and right sacro iliac are throbbing AND out of the blue I'm having problems getting my food down...like there's a trap in my pouch.  I'm eating only tiny bites, chewing the hell out of it and its just not working right now.  The reflux I was having seems to be better, thanks to a knowledgeable former Bandster who schooled me on how to take my PPI, but the other issues are making me crazy, thinking my band is exacerbating my IBS/arthritis symptoms.

Anyone else have experience with this?

yes - my previous posts from last summer recount similar symptoms (with an empty band for well over a yr).

i was diagnosed with fibro & OA last july & 3 drs insisted the band come out - immediately.
revised 2 months later & still have lasting issues - and yes, i blame the band.

taking tramadol 3X a day has been a significant boost, because i run an active life outdoors.    never took a single med other than an occasional aspirin prior.

I too have IBS that I am working hard on improving.   So far, red meat only once a week  (should really give it up but I love it too much)   I also am lactose intolerant since the band so I gave up milk, but once in a while take lactaid if I choose to have a milk product.  I have also given up wheat and feel much better.

As for getting food stuck or trapped I would do liquids only for 3 days, then liquid mushies for 3 days, then thick mushtes for 3 days , then slowly reintroduce the eating for the band diet.

Diary all of this and then if no improvement your dr will see and know if theband is good for you.

Remember it is very important to be hydrated at all times!  Good luck to you and I hope you feel well soon!

Thanks Ann...I've done the progression dozens of times the last year.  I just posted a new thread.  My IBS and arthritis do flare at the same time, this is the first time I've connected it to tightening in my band...it has no fill and this is the first time since my unfill that I've gotten tighter for no reason.  I'm resigned to it coming out, probably January.  I think I want to revise to VSG, but a couple of newer revisors experiences are making me question that.

Stephanie I was afraid for you that it would come to this.  Check out the Revision and Sleeve boards.  Also join the failed band group if your not there already.  I have yet to find a Band to Sleever that wasn't happy.  I do realize the time shortly out after a sleeve is much harder than the band (my dd and sister were both sleeved after watching me deal with the band.)

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

I want to get the sleeve too, but kaiser does not revise!!!

I suggest you go on the sleeve board and let them know about your health problems and see if people there can give you some input!

I wish you well!!

yep was self pay twice - wasn't least invasive on the wallet.

i will say my insurance has paid for EVERY test / meds along the way & most of my vitamins (minus copay).
being a lightweight each time was my issue for bariatric coverage - but they don't penalize me for having the surgery after the fact.

the number of diagnositc tests alone were an astronomical cost & i'd be devastated not being able to recieve proper treatment/care/revision for a faulty WLS.

this discussion of costs were not discussed back in 2006/2007 - so those newly looking into this surgery, might want to have deep deep pockets or off the chart insurance that doesn't limit once per liftetime WLS.

I know a lot of people needing revision are scared of self pay, because if there are complications the hospital bill can skyrocket...

I find self pay when I have insurance not fair!    I work 50 to 60 hours a week, help support my partner with stage 3 breast cancer and my dear sweet 89 year old mother.

I have kaiser and feel that the band just wasn't a match for me.  too tight or not tight, never full!    Not fair for them to choose to not help solve my issues.   And not fair for people to assume that self pay is kind of easy.   Cancer I found with all the co pays, gas and time off work for the significant others burns through savings.  To keep my partner alive and not needing anything I would do again in a heartbeat!!  The band I would not!
