What are you eating today? Weekend edition
I dumped several times yesterday and had an epiphany (finally) about what I need to do to deal with it. It seems that one unwise (or unexpected) food choice leads to dumping, and after that my body is reeling all day long. I may feel like I've recovered after 30 or so minutes of suffering, but in fact my blood sugar is majorly messed up, bouncing up and down like a puppy chasing a ball, and nothing I do or eat after that is a quick fix. Once the cycle is started, it takes less and less sugar to trigger another dumping episode, and I feel like crap all day long. And, the blood sugar bouncing up and down is probably aggravating this crazy hunger I've had since being sleeved.
So although it goes against my nutritional instincts (such as they are), I'm going to do my best to restrict my carb intake (especially the "white" ones - flour, sugar, white grains) for a week, and monitor my blood sugar as much as possible, even though it's hard for me to do that at work. I hate the very thought of a low-carb diet because it means giving up things like Greek yogurt and fruit (which make me dump), but surely I can do it for a week.
Today's plan is:
B: protein latte (made w/ almond milk)
S: small sausage patty (homemade, so lower sodium)
S: soft boiled egg
L: leftover steak, fennel salad
S: cheese stick
S: almonds
D: lamb chop with lemon & olives, zucchini
S: WW peppermint patties (2)
The other thing I need to get over is my anger over all the "surprises" that have come with my sleeve surgery - things that I never heard another sleevester mention. There's nothing I can do about it now because the sleeve is not reversible, so I just have to find a way to live with it as comfortably as possible.

have been doing. Very hard without a tool. I am going to do 48 hours
Atkins induction and not worry about the cals for the next two days.
Will update to night.
B: cheddar brat
L: pork tenderloin
D:roast chicken breast
S: bacon
I made it back on track today;
less than 1200 claories
less than 5g carbs
more than 100g protien
more than 100oz water
I am up 4.2 pounds for the 24 and still at 48 hours. All my insides hurt from the splurge.
One day at a time.
I am 18 months out from band to sleeve revision. When I read some of the problems you are having and see what you are eating this early out it might be your food choices that are causing a problem.
Of course I am not a Dr and you should always follow your Dr. plan but in saying that my experience is very different. I could never have eaten the amount and type of food you are eating at 6 weeks out. Even though you are taking a PPI with the types of food you are eating it might be making more acid since you are still healing.
Looked up on day on my food journal when I was 6 weeks out:
B: Premier Protein Shake
L: 1 oz tuna with 1/2 tsp mayo
D: 1 scrambled egg
Through out the day I also had a second Premier Protein shake. Finally got up to 64 oz of water at 6 weeks out.
6 months out:
B: Premier Protein Shake
L: 1 1/2 oz left over chicken and 1/4 cup green beans
S: 1 oz almonds
D: 2 oz Filet steak and 2 ozs squash
18 months:
B: 1/2 sandwich round, 1 scrambled egg and 1 oz cheese
S: small apple
L: Chipolte taco insides of the taco only, about 2 ozs beef, tomato, lettuce and cheese
S: Greek yogurt with MIO flavoring
D: BBQ chicken breast 2 ozs, 3 bites of hubby's mashed and 1/4 cup green beans
Now of course this is not everyday. Sometimes I have a cupcake, popcorn or a cookie here and there. Certainly not perfect at eating.
It took me almost a year to wrap my head around the fact my restriction with the sleeve is the same daily unlike with my band. Also it took awhile to get restriction with my band and with my sleeve it was immediate.
Unlike you I rarely get hungry and haven't taken a PPI since I was 6 months out. In my opinion that is a lot of food and the types of food might not be the best since you are still healing
You might get different opinions by asking the vets on the sleeve board what they think. Again, this is just my experience with what I did and was able to eat. Also I have never dumped but never ate the amount of carbs you are eating because I couldn't have fit them in.
I know you were happy with your band and the eating is so different with the sleeve maybe it will take a while for you to accept what you have and make it work. Everyone is very different so what I do might not work for you and what you do won't work for me. Just trying to let you know what worked for me.
Have a great day!!!!

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that my portions are too big since I didn't state any portion amounts in my post. Partly because I can't predict them and partly because it would be tedious to keep repeating "a bite of XXX" over and over. But I'll try harder next time. For example:
B: about 4 oz. of protein latte (4 g carbs)
S: 3 bites of a small sausage patty (0 carbs)
S: about 2/3 of a soft boiled egg (0.4 g carbs)
L: 2 bites leftover steak, 1 bite fennel salad (1 g carbs)
S: about 3/4 of a 24 gram cheese stick (0.3 g carb
S: 4 almonds (1 g carbs)
D: 3 bites of lamb chop with lemon & olives, 2 bites of zucchini (0.6 g carbs)
S: WW peppermint patties (2) (16 g carbs)
I'm not clear either on how you determined that my food choices aren't the best and include too many carbs. Today's menu totals 23.3 grams of carbs, assuming that I manage to eat everything I planned. Is that too much? Why are fennel and zucchini are not good food choices while green beans, tomato, lettuce, and mashed potato are OK? Do you find that certain vegetables make you extra hungry? If so, which ones?
My surgeon's and dietitian's instructions don't forbid carbs. I'm supposed to emphasize protein, avoid liquid/soft calories, and to eat no more than 1/2 cup at a time. I'd be one happy camper if I could eat 1/2 cup at a time, but eating that much makes me dump. I had been eating fruits and veggies in the hope of preventing constipation, but since fruit makes me dump, that leaves veggies. Some of the things you mention in your meal plan (protein shake, apple, sandwich bread, yogurt, cupcake, cookie) also make me dump. I also dump on cottage cheese, skim milk, and certain protein bars. At this point, anyway. We can only hope it gets better in the future as I monitor my blood glucose more closely.
Thanks for reminding me about the sleeve board but since my previous visits there were both unhelpful and distressing, I prefer getting advice privately from the sleevers and sleevesters I know and trust. At this point, anyway.
When you were taking a PPI, which one was it? I've tried omeprazole and dexilant so far, with no results, so I'd appreciate any suggestions you can offer.
thanks,
Jean

i think you misunderstood what I meant. I posted 3 different menus with how my progression was over 18 months. And you are right that I didn't know the amount you were eating since you didn't say in the original post.
in short my observation was that as early out as you are in my opinion and my experience was that I could not eat those types of foods. I would never want to offend you or anyone else. Was just trying to help by showing I had to go slowly with the types f food I ate when I was so newly sleeved and now that I am 18 months out I can eat almost anything smaller amounts.
Please accept my apologizes if I offended you my intent was to help since your post was about having some difficulty and my experience at 5 weeks out was much different than yours which I thought might because of the different types of food.
Good Luck.
