Preop Diet

So, my lap band surgery is scheduled for September 18 and I am on day 8 of my preop diet.  3-4 Protein shakes daily, borth, water, sf jello, sf popsicles.  Its the hardest thing I've ever done.  I'm both anxious and excited for my surgery day.  I have cheated a couple times with a few small cut up pieces of poached boneless, skinless chicken breast, less than an ounce, and a couple pieces of deli turkey.  I just want something to chew on.  I'm not much actually hungry as just wanting something to chew.  Because I did cheat a couple times, I'm worried about what they say about the liver.   I hope everything will be ok.  My husband keeps reasurring me that everything will be fine, but I can't help but worry.  Any body else have this trouble?

My preop diet was 14 days, 3 shakes + dinner.  Dinner was allowed to be 3-6 oz lean protein, salad with FF dressing and low glycemic veggies (zucchini, peppers, green beans, etc).  I could eat all I wanted of the veggies and salad.  I made my shakes with skim milk.  I lost 13 lb in 14 days.

If you're going to "cheat" you're doing it right...with lean protein...should not be a problem.  Good luck with your surgery.

My one "cheat" was a bite of boneless, skinless chicken breast.  I
chewed and chewed until it was dry fiber and spit it out as I thought
they would "know" and I wouldn't get my surgery.  Than with hind sight
and gaining on the liquid pre-op diet, I figured out the Atkins diet I
had been on was better for the liver.

When my DD went thru I was pretty sure she would cheat as she had
to do 3 weeks

She knew from here about the wide varity of pre-op diets.  So, for the
first two week she had the shakes and a chicken breast for dinner.
She had 4-6 oz the first week and 2-3 oz the second and strict pre-op
the third week!

So, your cheat is a cheat to your center but, not others.  I wouldn't lose
sleep over it.  And I was the most annal about doing everything "right".
Than when I got the band out the pre-op diet was, NOTHING.  Just don't
eat after mid-night.  Go figure, they still had to pick the liver up to get the band out.

A true Liver Shrinking Diet consists ONLY of Low Carbs.  The calories and fats do not matter.  It is the carbs!  When you eat carbs, the glycogen is stored in your liver.  This makes the liver swell.  If you eat any carbs at all, your surgeon will be able to tell when he gets in there, but if you do not, your liver should be small and firm.  My pre-op diet was zero carbs.  My surgeon explained it this way - and as a Diabetic Educator, I knew about the Glycogen stores in the Liver.

My pre op was barbaric to say the least and now I know it wasn't even neccesary. I had a 30 day skim milk diet (usually used for RNY). I could have all the skim milk I could drink in 15 min 3x a day PLUS all the no calorie clear drinks I wanted the rest of the day! This was horrid for me cause I don't even like milk much less skim milk. I did it and was very proud of my self for it but geez louise. Oh I take it back I did have a slice of swiss cheese 3 different days about mid diet. I think they all went to nazi training school for these diets.
