This weeks bummer...

I had the lap-band done 11/2009 and have done very well with it since the beginning.  Unforunately in April this year I started having some awful reflux/GERD issues, with 1cc removed from band the problem was resolved and the NP tried to say the band was too tight.  I totally begged to differ, but was willing to give it a whirl.  Several weeks later I returned for a check up, 1/2cc was put back in the band.  Within a week I was having the same reflux.GERD issues.  So, I was scheduled for a barium swallow/xrays to evaluate the placement of the band.  Met with my surgeon after and was given the ungodly results of, the band has slipped/prolapsed.  Blah!!  All the fluid was removed from the band with hopes of it resolving on its own, but was told that once it slips there is a greater chance of it slipping again.  That's when the revision to sleeve was mentioned.  I'd heard of it, but didn't know much about it and was told to research the hell out of it and return in two weeks for another barium swallow/xray and see the surgeon again.

I feel really bummed out/depressed about the situation.  I hadn't really planned on having WLS again, nor did I even imagine giving up the band!

Anyone else run into the same issue???
Have the revision?
After revision, wished the band was still there or more impressed with sleeve?

Yes, yes and HELL yes much more impressed with the Sleeve.

My band slipped, they unfilled me it resolved. With practically no restriction since I was in the midst of being refilled my band slipped again, had an emergency removal of the band, waited two months and was revised to the sleeve. Best thing I ever did for myself. Goal weight in under six months and maintaining fairly easily for almost six months.

I've been going through a similar issue, tho my PA said I didn't have a prolapse, just a slight enlargement of the pouch, but the barium just dripped throughmy band with only 3.5 cc in my 11 cc band.  All the saline was removed and my symptoms are gradually easing, but I'm still not able to eat the way I should at every meal.  I have, however, lost 6 lbs in 3 weeks. I don't plan to revise any time soon, but am keeping a close eye on the situation and eating what I should most of the time.  I have to take omaprazole 2 x per day with the second dose at bedtime to prevent reflux symptoms during sleep.  That seems to help.
Hope your symptoms improve, I would just leave the band empty and do the best you can in the meantime.  Good luck!

Well I haven't had a revision ...yet but plan to once I hit Soc. Sec. age in a few years. I haven't read of one person wishing they had their band back instead of the sleeve. I've been hanging out on the sleeve board too for the last year or so since I had my band emptied to learn as much as I can before I hopefully get my sleeve. From what I've read they say they like the sleeve better because it works the way they were told the band would but didn't. I haven't read one unhappy revision post, so if there are any unhappy ones they haven't posted about it. I suggest you read the sleeve forum for awhile and see what they all say. Good luck to you!

There is a lot of info on the Revision Boards too.  Also read the sleeve boards.
You will find lots of ex banders there.

I have just been approved to get the band out.  But, while I was in process my insurance implemented a once in a lifetime WLS policy.  When I talked to the head of referals about this she said way to many banders where getting revision is why they implemented the new policy.
I asked if wouldn't it make more since not to cover the band than.  At least let those that didn't know have a chance.

Do LOTS of research!

Good luck with what every you decide.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

My surgery was the day after yours. The only reason I still have my band in is that I can't afford to revise at this time. As far as VSG..........I have known MANY bandsters that revised to VSG and I have NEVER heard one of them say they wish they had their band back! Go ask about it on the VSG forum. You will find plenty of FORMER bandsters on there that can give you an accurate comparison. Good luck!
