Agree Kate. We do need to hear everything. Sometimes it is just the way that people present their expressions gets a little rough.

I welcome it all and do what I want with the information.

I agree that people should get all the info that they can. I think my problem is that I already have the band and I don't have any negative issues with it. I was looking for support in my weight loss journey, not how bad it is that I have a band. So far, that is all I have heard. I can't mention I am happy with it with out people coming and saying 'just wait, it'll get bad for you too!' So much for support.

First.. I am new to this forum.  I came to this site looking for support, motivation, sharing best practices...etc. as well as helping others.
What I keep finding here are people talking down the band, telling new people they should rethink before surgery and down right scare tatics.  Speaking for myself, I didn't jump right to surgery as I am sure most people did their homework before signing on the dotted line.

So my question is: Why are you here?  Why not be in a forum designed for your life style.. and how would you feel if people talked down your decision.

Just had to say what was on my mind.

I am here to get the truth out about the band. If my message scares you, then please block me, I'm not trying to scare anyone, but I understand that this can be quite scary.

LuAnn, read the negatives and the postiives and ignore the childish bullsh*t (people picking apart your sentences to twist what you're trying to say, blatant sarcasm with every word).  Some people are just buttheads.   I'm not telling you to ignore what went wrong with the band for others--because it COULD happen to you.  That's the truth and you never know what can happen.  However, COULD is NOT a definitely, and some just always want to lump you in with what happens to them because that's what makes them feel better.  If their band failed, then yours will too.    You did your homework, you made a decision---period.

You don't own the message board.  Don't tell us with band failures to hang elsewhere.

Please believe me that I am being very sincere with my reply to you, but it may appear that I am being rude, I promise you that I am being very sincere.

" and how would you feel if people talked down your decision. "

Your statement above is one of the problems we have here on this forum with communication. For me, I am not trying to " talk down " your decision, in fact...this isn't about you at all. Let me see if I can explain.

What I really want you to know is that,

I don't have any problems with you.
I don't know you.
I don't have any problems with your decision.
Your surgery choice is yours to make.

All I'm doing is providing my experiences and my knowledge regarding LAGB issues, concerns, injuries, and information, for anyone who might be researching the LAGB. That is all, it has absolutely zero to do with you personally.

What type of surgery you choose is your business, and I will respect your decision, even if it is the Lap Band.

One more thing...I do not use " scare tactics " to get my message out. I use fact based information, as well as my own personal experience.

Sharing the truth about LAGB does not equate to " scare tactics "

The single most important piece of information that those researching the Lap Band need to know is this...

The FDA does not require mandatory reporting of Lap Band injuries, therefore you ( in general you ) will not find the truth regarding Lap Band complications in any medical journals, and this is why so many of us have chosen to stay here on this forum. We just want you ( in general you ) to make an informed decision...that's all.

Many of thought we " did our homework " but in reality, we were mislead by a deliberate omission of all the facts, because not one of us ( at that time ) were aware that our surgeons were not legally mandated to report Lap Band complications to the FDA.

Honestly, I don't want ppl to go through what I did. I had no damage to my esophegus after 7.5 years of vomitting acid. Someone else might not be so lucky.

My port twisted. My nurse wad able to reach mine. Others I know had to get adjustments with xrays.

I suffered from band enduced bulemia for 11months.

I don't want ppl to suffer like I did.

I came here years ago and researched all the WLS to see what would be the best fit for me. At that time the band was it, hands down! Didn't even hear of the sleeve! My problem was always being to tight! One time being so tight that I couldn't even swallow my own saliva! I had excellent care and surgeons at first. Then my surgeon left and I was moved around and honestly got tired of making the 3 hour journey only to be told the same thing. Eat your protein first drink your fluids and call if you have problems. If I ate my protein first, I would be done after the first bite! So, I just did my best, I have lost 65 pounds and fluctuate about 5 pounds. I slime often, bp often, get stuck often, why? Because my band is never the same everyday! I could eat 3 pieces of pizza one day, and a bite the next! Never could eat in the morning, always have done my protein shakes in the morning. I loved my band even with all the problems, because I have been on a lot of diets, but this is the first that keptt the weight off! Not sure feeling this way is worth it, and now that I have read that this is not how the band is suppose to work I am ready to figure out how to get it removed and pray that I have learned that eating small portions are enough to make me happy! I really just don't think I can live with some of the new side effects that are causing me pain and stress, and feeling of being choked to death! Everyone has the right to choose, and had I heard the stories Iam hearing now and the sleeve had been available, that would be my choice. My only concern is, it is new,and who's to say five years from now there will be issues with that surgery too!

You already know I'm right there with you.

The only thing is the sleeve isn't new. I had research and wanted it in '08. People like my sister have had the sleeve as the first of a two part surgery called a DS.

People have been getting the DS for years. They would do the sleeve on severely obese patients, like 4-600 pounds.  They needed to get them down enough to safely do the second part, the by-pass.

They found they did so well some did need or did go back for the second surgery.  So even though the say the sleeve as a stand-alone is new, it has been around awhile with good success.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Ok, so DS and the sleeve are the same. I remember hearing about the Duodounl switch but didn't know it was the same as what everyone is calling the sleeve. I was only offered ryn and the band so those are the ones we were offered.
