The Sleeve is no longer considered a "Purely Restrictive Sugery" based on this...

I am just not so sure about this.  I was sleeved  6 months ago and a HUGE sweet eater.  Granted, I am not eating sugar like I used to but it is still in the diet on occasion.  I have never had any issues with dumping.  I did have some low blood sugar issues for about a month or so after surgery, but it was always first thing when I woke up and noticed that I needed to get some carbs in.  Not a big deal and now not even an issue.

I spend a lot of time on the VSG boards, and dumping truly does not seem like it is as prevelent as what this study makes it out to be.  There is an occasional post about a sleever experiencing it, but I think just as many from people sort of wishing it was an issue to help curb the sugar demon.

Overall, i think the type of surgery is very individudal.  For me, thus far I am thrilled with my choice.  I still have some pounds to lose though so we will have to see if I get them all of and then of course maintain it.  So far so good though!

Do you think the VSG curbed your sweet tooth?  Looks like you've done very well!  I am not doing so well with the band and wish I could do the VSG (seems less invasive than RNY (for me anyway), but since I have a sweet tooth, nothing but dumping will cure it, I'm sure!

No, I don't think the sleeve in itself curbed the sweet tooth.  Over the first couple months I was very careful to keep my carbs under 40, and slowly my cravings for constant sweets improved.  This was by far my greatest concern with electing the sleeve- I totally doubted my ability to stay away from carbs/sweets.  My doctor recommended the RNY for me because of it, but I didn't feel like that was the right path for me.  I guess in the back of my mind I also know that if it didn't work out I could revise to RNY.  I have lost enough already that I would not consider revision at this point, and confident that I will continue with the weight loss as well.

I can't say if the sleeve would be enough for your sweet tooth, but I can say that at least up until this point it has worked well for me.  I think the major difference has been when I have an occasional bad day, I still wake up the next day with the sleeve ready to work again.  I would rather keep the last 30ish that I need to lose then risk dumping- it just seems terrible :(

Just to jump in here since as I mentioned above I have "dumped" on occasion, I by no means dump on all sugar as I enjoy sweet treats fairly often.  Its only when I REALLY overdo it.  The most memorable occassion was Coconut Shrimp with some kindof pina colada sauce - come to think of it that much sugar may have made me sick pre-op!    Its not the big deal NanaB is making it out to be at all and I would take my sleeve over a lap band any day!

I think it is great that you are sharing this information becuase there are pople on here who are looking for information and they desever to get all that is out there.

I think everyone by now ( at least the ones who have been here probably a month) people should be aware that all side-effects could occur with all of the bariatric surgeries. If you push your luck you will get sick.

I think all surgeries have been sold/marketed as a "MIRACLE SURGERY" or "THE SAFEST"  available at the moment. "IT'S GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE"

it is to be expected. i remember when i fist started researching and would go to the info meetings about 5 or 4 years ago, they were selling the LabBand the same way. A rep grabbed my hand and said "Baby you are too young this is the safest way to go, and guess what NO DUMPING SYNDROME"  of course by then i had been working at the hospital a good 5  or 6 years and I knew better. I talked to a very good GI doc and he gave me the real talk. but that was my experience.

and in the end you are right, everyone with any surgery can have side effects.
