Throwing up after lap band surgery

First of all: if you have the band and never got the "full sooner, full longer" part as has happend with many of us, it is HARD to limit what you eat. It's just like BEFORE you got the band.

Second of all: DON'T BE TRYING TO THROW UP! It's not healthy. Throwing up is your body doing what it needs to do when the food can not be processed. Don't try to initiate this.

Now my take on what you are saying is different from Mindy's. From Mindy's band experience I think she would get sick when she ate and felt the need to throw up and sometimes couldnt. I think she thinks you are experiencing the same thing.

My interpretation of what you have said is that it is psychological (and correct me if I am wrong!). That you fell guilty b/c you have eatten more than you should have and that b/c of that you want to throw it up.

The band doesn not work for many ppl. It doesn't seem to be working for you, but I really think you need to talk to someone about these psychological issues that you are having. I would suggest you speak to a psychologist that deals with eating disorders. I would also suggest you speak to you Dr. about your band issues. Is revision a possibility? If so, I would still suggest the counceling first.

Good luck!

Actually, I read this differently.  I think that she's experiencing being stuck.  when you are stuck you feel that if you could throw up the food item, you would feel better.  Perhaps the proper question should be "What can I do so that the food item isn't stuck anymore and I feel better?"

IF you think that slipps are " not common" and that throwing up wont cause them you need to keep looking . I followed my band doc rules to a T . Did everything he asked . got unfills the MINUTE I was too tight and I STILL Slipped my band TWICE !!!
People who have had issues w/ the band are people who have had the band for MANY YEARS , If you do not want to listen to our warnings then dont ! HOWEVER . You were WARNED !
I find it expremly disheartening that people get so upset with others who are trying to help them and warn them about the pain and suffering we have gone through , Suffering YES !!!
If you care enough to find out what that is read my blog ..
Not being able to eat on a daily basis w/ out pain thanks to the band is suffering ...and losing 125 pds to only gain it back is tourture, Good luck to you i wish you no harm. But I certainly would not be getting pissy with people who are trying ot help you not go through what they went through !

Yes, people do vomit or "PB" with the band, but that doeasn't make it a good thing to do. Any time you're doing that it is simply going to increase your risk of a complication. Please, please, do not try to make yourself vomit on purpose.
If this "stuck" feeling or overfull feeling is happening to you a lot, you really need to looks at how you're eating and try to head off the problem before it happens. Are you measuring your food? Are you taking small bites? Are you chewing well enough? If you feel like you're doing all of those things and it still happens a lot, you may be a little too tight.
If it's a very infrequent event, it may just be that once in a whil a bit that's a little too large gets past you and gets stuck in there. As uncomfortable as it is, making yourself vomit is not the answer. At time like that I sometimes find it helpful to take a sip of warm liquid and just wait it out; sometimes it all comes up but usually it eventually moves on through.
And, you CAN still truly vomit from all the way down in the lower stomach with a band, but that has only happened to me when I had a stomach flu. It's HORRRIBLE.

Yes.  Slippage is more rare with how they are applying the bands the last few years.  That is always a concern of mine.  But I've learned to also listen to my body - and when I've ticked off my stoma?  it can throw a major hissy fit for quite awhile.  At that point, it is time for me to hit liquids for a few days, then move on to mushies, and back into food.

Please take care of yourself.  Your stoma could be irritated from the vomitting as it is really not something that should occur on a regular basis.  If you have 6cc in your band, maybe it is time to have some taken out just to give your stoma some time to relax?  They can always add more in as needed.  That is the beauty of the band.

But again, please be careful.  Frequent vomitting no matter what the cause is very hard on the body - much less someone with a band.  In my surgeon's practice, they want us calling them day or night if we are having vomitting - be it the flu, stuck episodes, or even eating too much.

They've been gracious with me when I had the flu & provided an antinausea patch.  And equally gracious when I called in because I over-ate and had two days of that horrible stuck. need to vomit, then always felt like I needed to vomit or I'd be miserable.

It sucks having to give up fluid from your band.  But it feels so much better after you have recovered and they start adding it back in.  Just look at your options.  Consider starting to weigh your food for portions sizes again.  Old habits die hard.  I find myself having to go back to the basics occasionally.  It helps quite a bit.

And by the way, I do have a history of bulemia.  Its something I had to get clearance from a psych before I could have my surgery.  If anyone has any questions about bulemia and the lapband, I would be happy to answer what I can.  But that topic is really something that should be handled by a professional.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thank you for your advice.  Also thank you for being honest about having a history of bullimia.  That isn't an easy thing for people to admit so my hat off to you.

I really am trying to be careful.  I guess I like a lot of people were looking for a quick fix and I thought the band was it.  I have it now and will learn to live with it and use it to my advantage but if I had to be honest I wouldn't have had it done.  I hate the feelings from food getting stuck or that bloated feeling.  Shed lots of tears through this whole process.  I would like to have the band removed but don't have the $14000 to have it done.  I wish I could just go back to pre-band.  I lost more weight then and enjoyed eating.  I guess we learn from our mistakes.  Thanks for all of your input and support.

Ok I just skimmed the replies, but if you have a fill 3 weeks out - that sounds very suspect. Also, welcome to your new life of throwing up. 7.5 years for me... And it wasn't when I was full either. First bite, fully chewed - I'd have to puke. It's the life. Usually I'd have to puke about 3 times, then I could eat something... I hated it. So embarrassing... That's why mine is gone.

Thank you so very much for responding.  You seem to be the first person who seems to understand what I am talking about.  Just to clear things up I didn't have the band May 11th, I had it May 2nd of 2011.  The question I have for you is were you actually throwing up like food or was it liquids.  The band has helped me in some ways but I really do regret having it done.  I have found  I actually lost more weight before the band and I was enjoying eating.  I seem to have a hate for eating now because it hurts when food gets stuck and I can't get it moved.  That was my question in the first place - how to throw it up or get it moved to feel better.  Somehow my post got twisted into being used for some people's soap boxes.  Thank you for the post.
