Breaking a Plateau!

During the last 4 and half years,I have hit a lot of plateaus!  I have tried to remember each and every time, the journey is just as important as the destination!  Getting to goal is all of our biggest dream, but learning along the way is truly more important.

What I've learned is I can and have broken many plateaus this way:

Increasing the intensity and duration of my workouts.  Six days ago, I started doing this!  I have started working out twice a day with interval training, 45 mins in the morning on the cycle and 45 mins in the evening on the elliptical.

Increase my protein intake 80-100 gms a day.

Decrease my carbs to less than 20 gms a day.

Six days I started during this, today I am down 8 lbs!  The scale is seeing numbers I haven't seen in years!  I am so pleased.

I agree with you...I focus more on my exercise when I hit a plateau.  Intervals do wonders for me.  Also changing up my routine.  But I do make sure I am eating high protein, low carb meals.  It always works for me.

I don't like some of the extreme things people do to break plateaus...I believe you will gain some of that weight back as soon as you start eating regularly.

I believe it's the extreme diets to break plateaus that cause our metabolisms to slow down further.  I dieted my way up to 488lbs over the last 20 year.  I never plan to do that again.  I have learned that it isn't good to break a plateau with an extreme.  It's best to do it with a diet that you can sustain for life.  I could easily live the rest of my life with the diet I am doing now.

For dinner last night, I had the best baby spinach salad, with turkey, feta cheese, boiled egg whites, sunflower seeds, avocado and sugar free Ranch.  It was yummy!

The interval training is the best to condition your body.

You have done so well with your LapBand!  Congrats!

Congrats!!

I have to say that my treadmill is invaluable, and every now and then, I push an extra mile or more per workout when the weight loss is stalling BUT cutting out the simple carbs is the key for me!!

Thanks for sharing!!

thanks C_cubed!
For me it's not just the simple carbs.  I don't eat those regularly.  It's all carbs.  Simple and Complex.  I have PCOS and carbs hate my body!  I can gain pretty fast just from introducing brown rice and whole grains into my diet.

I usually keep my carbs - to complex only 50 gms or less.

I'm really happy for you! It's good advice you've given here. I find that this works for me, as well. I have gone down a clothing size in the last 2 weeks from being very careful about what I consume AND really increasing my workout intensity. (OK, the other night, I admit, it was because the June bugs were flying at me fast and furiously while I was walking and I just wanted to get back home! I booked faster than I had in a long time! But, a workout is a workout!)

Congratulations on your 8 pounds!

Hilarious!  Maybe we should hire the June bugs to chase you around the neighborhood!  That would probably do it for me too!

I hate low carb.  It's boring to me because I have done it so long.  I don't enjoy meat!  I was a vegetarian for 7 years - so meat is something I have to force myself to eat.  But the low carb lifestyle works the best with my PCOS.
