Thank you, NanaB!!  I love your posts...  thank you for being so positive.  I'm a newbie, but I have no regrets (I know Maria will chime in telling me to just wait) and what will be will be IF I have a problem.  But for right now, I know I made the right decision!!   I'm not even filled and I've lost 38 pounds (26 before surgery, 13 since surgery) and I feel great!

Being possitive can be nice. Being realistic serves a much better purpose. Jean was always possitive. She KNEW she made the rigt decision as well. She told us that repeatedly. Look where it got her. She's too f'ed up from her band to even be able to revise.

But if that's what u want...............so be it.

Astambo..follow your heart...and you may need to change surgeons that believe in the lap band...make sure your surgeon is part of the Center of Excellence...that have excellent aftercare...and YES YOU CAN LOSE ALL YOUR WEIGHT WITH THE LAP BAND ...you are young and have your whole life ahead of you and your metabolism is a lot better than someone that is older ...so your chance of success will be greater.....even if you have to get your band replaced..often times it is a quick and easy surgery.....

Here is a guide on how the lap band works if you choose it....

Naomi, do you have any idea what it is to be a COE?  Any?  All it means is they have the right policies and procedures in place.  That's it.  It has absolutely nothing in the world to do with surgeon skill.  Some of the biggest bariatric butchers are COEs.

Again, being a COE means absolutely nothing about surgeon skill.  Zippo, nada.

Adjustable Gastric Band on 11/10/11
I have mixed feelings about it.  I had the lap band surgery in 10/11.  I initially lost 70 lbs, but have gained five lbs back recently.  I will be having a fill soon, so I think it will help.  I work hard at my weight loss with exercise and diet.  I want to lose more weight, and I feel stuck where I am.  Many lap banders are successful, and some are not.  I would go for a 2nd opinion, that may help.  I was told that this surgery was reversible, I still believe that it is.  Good luck!  Michelle.

Personally there was a reason, I got the LapBand.  I felt that the Sleeve, RNY and DS were too invasive and too drastic.  I needed to lose over 350lbs and my insurance demanded I only get RNY or DS.  I was self pay and I got the LapBand.  If I were to do it again, I would still get the LapBand.  I have no regrets.  I have not had one complication and have lost almost 65% of my total body weight.  My surgeon still insists mine can be removed and I can revise to any other surgery at any time.  He told me that there are many patients in Australia who have had their bands for longer than 15 years without any complications.  I believe him.  He is not trying to sell me on the LapBand.  I already have it.

Do your research and find the surgery that is right for you.  Both are considered "restrictive" procedures.  If you're a "snacker" or a "grazer" or a "sugar addict" you won't do well with the LapBand or the Sleeve.

Go to the Sleeve board and read as many posts there as you can.  It is not complication-free.  Truly no WLS is complication free.  It is all about finding the surgery which is right for you.  Good Luck!

Revised to the Sleeve after losing 271 lbs with the LapBand.

I've been contemplating over and over which procedure is right for me. The lap band or VSG? I am 24 years old and weigh 270 lbs. My surgeon is pushing the VSG saying that I can't lose enough weight with the band. Isn't the band safer and effective when more personal effort is put in? I am scared of the long term effects of VSG, what happens when I'm 80 years old and need a feeding tube? They can't reattach my stomach! Need advice, any people who have had success with the band, please share with me!!!!
Your surgeon is smart.  Listen to him.

I had the band, never lost 100%, had band induced bulimia and finally revised to bypass and I am very happy.  The band was the worst decision I have ever made.

Go for VSG!

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

The band requires a lot of self discipline and self control.  Its not for everyone.  I personally love my band and I love my surgeon and his staff, but  at the end of the day, its up to you.  Here is a comparison chart for you to review:

Thank you for all of your replies? Has anyone out there lost 100 pounds with the band? How long does it take? I know the band takes self discipline and strict diet and exercise but the long term effects of the sleeve aren't available so that scares me a lot!

Ok you keep wanting to know if anyone has lost 100 pounds with the band. Of course they have. If you don't know that then you have done no research! No one can tell you how long it will take YOU because you may lose it in 6 months...............then again you may have your band 4 years and lose 15 pounds. IT'S A CRAP SHOOT!

You state that the long term effects of the sleeve aren't available and that scares you. Well the long term effects of the band ARE and that scares ME! Lol:

Go on VSG board and ask questions!

Without knowing your medical history, or type of person (eater) you are, NO ONE HERE can tell you which way to go.

Can you lose the weight you need with a band? It's possible. I lost over 200 pounds. Will you be more successful with another operation? It's possible.

The surgeon who told you about VSG, is he a bariatric Doctor? How many Doctor's have you seen? I always suggest seeing a variety of Doctors before settling on one. Heck I saw 8 different Doctors before I decided on mine. Look at it this way - we'll get at least 2 or 3 estimates when it comes to getting our car (or some mechanical device) fixed. Aren't we worth a bit more than that?

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom
