Protein shake-a-palooza

I've been sampling a lot of pre-made protein shakes lately. Not because I rely heavily on them or because I'm too tight for solids, but just because my morning are really busy with getting myself and a 3 year old out the door. I can either get up 20 minutes earlier every day so I have time to eat a real breakfast or I can get 20 minutes more sleep and drink breakfast on the way to work. I vote for sleep!

I know (from experience) that it can be expensive to buy a multi-pack of something, only to find out it tastes like absolute crap, so I thought I would post my asessment of the ones I've tried so far, in case anyone wants to know! In each I tried a chocolate flavor.

These are in order of taste alone, you'll have to assess the nutritional profile for yourself, but mostly I've been looking for lower carb options.

Svelte - freaking delicious and stevia sweetened, which is a plus for me because a lot of the other artificial sweeteners make me really gassy. I've tried all the flavors of this one and they are all excellent. It's kind of pricey though. http://sveltebrand.com/

Orgain: Good flavor, but similar in calories to the Svelte but you get less of it, so it isn't as filling. http://www.drinkorgain.com/
Core Power Natural High-Protein Milk Shake - lactose free even though it is made with milk, very simple ingredient list, very tasty, a little high in carbs http://www.corepower.com/chocolate-26g-products-4.php

Glucerna Hunger Smart: Very good flavor, fairly low in calories at 180. Formulated for diabetics, but that's probably a good thing for anybody. There's a $2 off coupon on the website! http://glucerna.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_te rm=hunger%2520smart&utm_content=hunger%2520smart&utm_campaig n=brand%2520recognition&cid=ppc_an_glu_ggl_bkws_0152

Atkins (Day Break and Advantage) - Not bad, have a fairly prominent artificial sweetener flavor, but not too bad.

Muscle Milk: VERY prominent artificial sweetener flavor, overly sweet, tolerable but not exactly enjoyable.

Full Bar Fit Shake: Pretty terrible actually. Too sweet, very chemical flavor. On the plus side, very thick, so it is filling.

Designer Whey 100: I was excited because it's a 100 calorie protein shake, but it is VILE. The chocolate tastes like it's been mixed with pepto bismol. Avoid this one for sure.

I've been thinking of trying something new....

I pretty much just stick with Slim Fast Low Carb - french vanilla.   A little higher in fat then I would like (9 g.) but 20 g. protein and 180 calories.  Tastes Great to me.

Thanks, Dev.

I don't use shakes much, but like to have some on hand for convenience.

It turns out that my grocery store carry Svelte and I will pick up a few.

I was thinking that 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 cappuccino would be tasty.

Have you tried any of the Syntrax? I love the cappucino and fuzzy navel

I've just been trying what I can find at Whole Foods and HEB (local grocery store), nothing that I have to order or go to a special store to obtain.

I fell in love with GNC's lean shake.  SO good!   I love the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry (my fav).   No artifical sweet flavor.  14 ounces, 170 calories, 6 carbs (2 of them sugar), 25 grams of protein.   I buy one case (12 bottles) and get one 1/2 off PLUS if you have a gold card you get 20% off.   Try it next time you're at GNC....

Vanilla Premier Protein is my absolute favorite. But I have only seen them at Costco. 30g protein, and 1g of sugar. Love um!

I bought a chocolate premium at Sam's Club but haven't tried them yet. I have also tried the Pure chocolate and it tasted like a tin can. Otherwise I have been using Atkins milk chocolate.

I have also been using the unflavored powder Syntrax. I put it in my crystal light. Only 40 calories.

I am having surgery on May 30th to fix a hiatal hernia and reposition my band. I wish my journey was as smooth as yours... but I have hit quite a few bumps along the way. But I am not giving up! I am determined this will be my fresh start. I am just hoping for no more reflux and consistent restriction.

I wasted almost 2 years before I fixed a leaky port... this time I am fixing things ASAP. Luckily my insurance is actually paying for this. I don't know how the girl in my new surgeon's office got it approved... but she did!

Wish me luck!! Better yet, scratch that, I will make my own luck. Wish me success! ;)
