They can't Recall the Lap Band - It's the most performed weight loss surgery in the world

I am not sure if repeated hospitalizations, dumping, hypoglycemia and god knows what else would be considered a better quality of life than lap band patients...but it is clear that gastric bypass folks yield better and long lasting weight loss than the lap band patients overall ....

But again, most lap banders KNOW that the gastric bypass will produce quicker and more weight loss than the lap band, there is no aurgment there -- or comparisons --they are totally different surgical procedures, the gastric bypass alters the metabolism which interferes with the absorption of critical nutrients -- people get the band to avoid all of that...NOW Living with the procedures and quality of life...

I have to strongly disagree with quality of life....most bypass people cannot eat from a regular menu at a restaurant. --..even years out. --  I KNOW MANY IN REAL LIFE ..to me...that's a deal breaker regarding quality of life....yes..some people don't dump and have other issues...but most do...

I know many gastric bypass patients in real life as well, and what you have said here is inaccurate.   The rate of re-operation for LapBand is higher than gastric bypass.  Dumping and hypoglycemia in most cases can be controlled by diet.   I actually think that lapband folks have more trouble eating a wide variety of foods than bypass people.  Especially foods like fruits, veggies and dense protein.

I can certainly understand that you want to show folks that you have been successful, and you have.   It hurts your argument when you don't stick to the facts though.  And it really hurts it when you try to make the band look good by saying things that are not true about other surgeries.    You don't need to go all Glen Beck to try and make your point.

Hmmm...everyone I know that had RNY had to read ingredients prior to eating out ..to make sure they don't get sick....I am not sure if you call that a great quality of life...I know right after surgery when you are excited and whatnot you probably don't mind dumping or checking the menus for a certain percentage of carbs or sugar...but it has wore out many of my friends over the years......

Regarding veggies and fruits most people who keep their bands adjusted properly and had their band installed right...can eat veggies, proteins and fruits with no problem...I've never had a problem with them..if I eat too fast I may get food stuck and that happens every 6 months or so...and I can certainly live with that....but I can eat normal small meals with my friends and coworkers with no issue and I have very normal life like many other lap banders that did not have complications.

Hmmmm......I'm a real life ex-bander and current RNY-er.  I can honestly say that eating is much more enjoyable with the RNY.   I eat far more normally with the bypass than I could with that darned band.

No more wondering if I can eat breakfast because my fickle band is too tight until noon. I can eat as soon as I wake up in the morning.  Breakfast is the most important meal after all.

I can eat oranges, celery, apples and eggs.  Things I could never tolerate with the band..... no matter how unfilled it was.  I eat them with ease with the RNY,

Yes, I do watch carbs and sugar but I had to do the same with the Band per my Doctor's and Nutritionist's instructions.  Didn't your Band Dr. give you similar instructions?

To add to this, as a previous Lap-Bander and a current VSG'er I can say that eating is much more enjoyable and normal now as opposed to the band.  I no longer have issues with tolerating certain types of foods and no more stuck episodes.

I've just recently had my 2nd lap band placed, and this time I'm experiencing the "dumping" that you say bypass patients suffer... being a 2nd band my specialist has already warned me that my chances of slippage/erosions are way higher.

And my obesity clinic that I attend is aware that certain bands are going to be recalled, especially the smaller size ones, so you are in fact wrong by saying they will NEVER recall them. Do you not know about silicone type breast impants and the recall and court action over them??? Same deal, there are too many patients with issues for it to be just patients/surgeons not following "the rules".
