You mentioned:

I think that if you have a lapband and you are problem free it's still a good idea to keep yourself aware of potential problems that may arise. At the very least it may cause you to get things checked out more often instead of just telling yourself that it's nothing. Knowledge is power. We shouldn't try to keep anyone in the dark when it comes to their health or well being.

Regarding Karen Boyle...I have no further comments...

The only reason I come here now, is to WARN NEWBIES of the common pitfalls of the lap band...MANY HAVE IGNORED THESE WARNINGS OVER THE YEARS ...AND ACT AS IF THEY DID NOT KNOW THE WARNING SYMPTOMS OF A TOO TIGHT BAND, AND WHEN THEIR BANDS SLIP SO BAD IT DAMAGES THEIR INSIDES...THEY COME HERE WITH AN AX TO GRIND...THESE PEOPLE I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR...

Could something ever happen to my lap band? I don't know, I don't know what the future may be...I could suffer another illness that may interfere with my band and it may need to be removed, but those are the risks I signed up for. There are precautions to help keep the band healthy and so far in 7 years I have followed those precautions and so far so good for me......

I have NO interest in the other alternative weight loss surgeries, RNY or Sleeve.....if there ever becomes a safer effective weight loss surgery that does not alter or remove the insides, I would seriously look at that, but for now, I don't believe there is any weight loss surgery that is safer for ME than the lap band.

I currently don't have any side effects or issues with my band so I have no reason to want it removed....I DOUBT the lap band will be recalled...THEY CAN'T recall the band when the studies backup the fact that for MOST PEOPLE the lap band is a safe procedure, and they can't recall the band because some people don't follow rules or go to reputable surgeons...and that 1800-thin issue was isolated to a particular surgery center....MOST surgeons that install the band are part of the center of excellence--......nowadays --also NO weight loss surgery is FREE from complications, that is the risk we take when getting ANY weight loss surgery a center of excellence will just lessen our risks.

I know for me if something happens and it has to come out I will not get another WLS done this is it for me.

I would hope that I have learned how to eat healthy since getting my band . Just because I wouldn't have the band no more dont give me a excuse to go back to eating pure junk again .  Yes, I have my bad days of eating bad but who doesn't . There isn't a single person that has WLS that can say I have ate healthy 100% of the time .  Everybody has their days.

I have also come to love exercise so I know that wont be a problem to keep going if something happened. I just adore my Zumba instructor and I wouldn't give up his class for nothing now .

I have always thought the band was  to teach me how to eat healthy , learn how to eat a well balanced  meal and exercise .  Me personally if I haven't learned how to do them things with the band then the band  has taught me nothing on losing weight .  It is a tool to help with weight loss but its also there to teach us how to do them things also .

I would feel more of a complete failure at not learning these lessons that the surgery was suppose to teach me .

Well said. I agree with you. I know I am retraining my brain and outlook on why I eat and what I should eat. I can't say that I love exercise yet, but I like the way I am feeling!

If there is a mass recall, then they should at least take them out with no fees...
Nana... We all know you are pro-band, and I am glad you have had no complications, however, the complications are out there.  People need to be aware of the symptoms.
If it isn't broke don't fix it??? Really?
Maybe what they have come to know as "normal living" with the band, is the symptoms...
Mine almost killed me.  I am glad there were people around that weren't afraid to step forward to say, "Hey, this has happened to me too"...  instead of feeling like a failure because of people like you that say, "oh you must be doing something wrong", to realizing that it wasn't your fault.  There is a problem!!!

If I followed the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" nonsense, I'd be a goner today. My surgeon (Kemmerling, Green Bay, WI) kept telling me that nothing was wrong with me ... meanwhile, the band was killing me.

I agree, Seriously Doubtful... it's a GOOD thing that people speak out. No one should have to feel alone.

Yes, you MUST know the signs of band problems.  Thank GOD for this board because I doubt many would know them.  I started to get too tight due to vasculitis and eventually realized, "Hey, this isn't good.  It can get worse if I don't take some fluid out."  My doctor sure didn't know the signs.  He wanted to just keep filling me and has no understanding of autoimmune or vasculitis diseases coupled with daily inflammation and meds like prednisne and chemo.

SOOOOOO, I say arm yourself with knowledge and then LIVE.  If the band really scares you then get it out (assuming stupid insurance will pay).  I pray we can all learn from Nic and so many others that went through hell and some almost losing their lives.

My friend that had bypass the same day I had lapband (met her on the boards) almost died awhile back.  She is getting her bypassed reversed due to her pancrease problems.  She will still have her pouch, but no bypass.  Let's face it....WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY OF ANY KIND IS FREAKIN' DANGEROUS as is being MORBIDLY OBESE.  It's up to the patient and doctors to decide what is the best course of action.

For me...I'm glad I have the band (all my docs were willing to allow), but I do realize that one day it may have to come out.  I used to worry about all the damage it could do etc, but instead I started to listen to my body and get things checked out every few months.  So far so good (knock on wood).
I've been on prednisone and chemo for over 7.5 years.  Gained over 160 pounds due to pred. Highest wt. 410. Surgery wt. 365. Current wt. 299
See ya,400s, 90s,80s,70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s, 10s 300s!!!!

You might want to mention to Nana that your band that "wasn't broke and didn't need fixing" and almost killed you has thus far cost you $90,000 in medical bills!

You can spend your life worrying or you can spend it living.  I've decided, and just in the last several months, to do the latter.  I spent a lifetime of worrying and it didn't make life any better.  I say be proactive, see your surgeon and know the tell tale signs of problems.  If you don't have a problem right now then don't make one up because chances are a real problem is right around the corner and it will need your full energy and attention in order to over come it.
