BOBsters?

Is there anyone who has had the band put over their RNY? If so, how does it differ from the RNY in terms of recovery and post-op diet? Do you feel better prepared for the challenges you face? Do you feel that the band has become your primary surgery, or do the two surgeries act as one special hybrid...if that makes sense.

My insurance will pay 100% for a BOB, but I have to see the surgeon for a 6 month supervised diet first. While I know that I can ask them questions, it's not quite the same as finding others who have been through it. Incidentally, that whole supervised diet makes no sense to me...my insurance, I suppose, wants me to lose weight so I don't need surgery, but the surgeon's office wants me to NOT lose weight so that I WILL have the surgery. It's really backwards!!

I will answer to the best of my ability as a BOBster...

Recovery for me was fast and no problems.  I think I only took the liq pain meds a day or so? The post op diet, I was so scared to screw up I followed it to a T as per my surgens office.  From what I have read it seems that every office is different... I did the liquid for a couple days then the full liquid until if I didnt use my teeth soon I was going to scream :)  Once I tollerated a few bites after chewing them to the consistancy of mush I slowly got brave and added solids.  From what I remember from the RNY it was similar, but I think I babied myself more this time becuase I was afraid to get sick and slip the band while when I had the RNY I was in the wrong mind set and said, eh if it dosent go down just get rid of it.... not proud to admit that but Im being honest.  (also if you read any of my other posts, I had a horrible experience with the RNY due to surgen and scar tissue complications ON TOP of my stupidity)

Your hybrid question DEFF makes sense to me.  I feel that the band deff helped the original move along correctly... reason being I didnt get a fill until MANY months later and had a decent weightloss.  As of now, I am almost a full year post op and only filled 3 times.

Goodluck with your insurance, you are soo lucky that they will cover.  Mine pretty much laughed at me through my denied letter.  But my amazing parents took it upon themselves to pay for it, so thats prob even more of my insentive to make this work.  If theres anything I can do let me know.. I may not have all the answers or even the right ones, but I'll do the best I can :)

DAMN, typed a long reply and when I hit submit, it dissapeared.  I agree with everything Nikki said, I am a BOBster too, had mine June 23, 2011, I am down 60ish lbs, right at post-RNY weight and looking to lose another 25lbs.  Click my profile, add as a friend, read what I've journaled.  All friends are BOBsters as well.

--Yes, Band is my primary surgery now but I still dump and I still have some malabosrption as I can see the oil in the toliet
--Recovery was a piece of cake, in hosptila less that 24hrs, walked around immediately, walked out of hopsital, went back to work immediately.
--Better prepared bc I am not taking anything for granted.  RNY was a so easy, you took it for granted.
--Eating is harder than RNY, you eat less, you throw-up more and your less hungry.

Feel free to email me with anything.  Nikki too, she is listed on my friends list. She always says she posts after me but this time I'm posting after her.

Thanks, guys. I started at 352, got to 215 over the course of 3 years, then started gaining (fertility treatments started that ball rolling!). Sitting on 265ish...ugh! I was such a slow loser, even when doing all the right things, that my orignal surgeon had little hope of me ever getting below 200. I am hopeful that the combination of surgeries will be the right set of tools I need to finally succeed.
