REALIZE Band on 03/27/12
I'm home from gall bladder removeral. Wed morning around 3am I was in more pain than I've ever been in. I was sure there was something wrong with my band. I was throwing voilently over and over. I finally made it to the hospital (passing out in pain a couple of times). I finally got some morphine, the pain was so bad, they had to give me a 2nd dose before I could get some relief. They ran a million tests and decided it was my gall bladder and it had to be removed immediatly.

After the surgery was over the surgeon told me that I did in fact have gall bladder disease, but that was not the cause of my pain. The cause of my pain was from some scar tissure from my band surgery wrapping tightly around an artery next to where my band was placed and cutting the circulation. He said it was freak thing, and may or may not happen again. If this ever happens again, you better believe the band will be coming out. I hope to NEVER experiance that kind of pain again.

I thought the explination was a little weird, so I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this?

(sorry if this is a little mixed up, I'm on pain meds right now :))

A friend of mine had scar tissue so badly she had to have her band removed.  The scar tissue not only was on her stomach but neighboring organs as well (like her liver).  So I'm not surprised to hear about your problem.

Is it the same surgeon that removed your gall bladder that did the band surgery?  If not, I'd have a follow up w/ your band surgeon and make sure this surgeon sends him a report.

I would follow up with your band doc but I have heard about bad scar tissue.

Unfortunately it is NOT at all a freak thing and you can almost count on it happening again. It happens more often than we'd like to think and until they go in, they will never know exactly what it is causing the pain. It is far from a rare event tho so make sure you keep ad eye on the whole situation!

I don't know how he could say that the gallbladder wasn't causing you pain, since they are HORRIBLY painful and that's pretty much a hallmark of gallbladder problems! I know from experience!

Wow. Serious complication for someone so early out. I remember one lady that posted about a yr. ago that had an erosion at only 1 month out.

Hopefully you won't have any more problems in the very near future, but you never know. You might want to consider joining one of the failed band groups.

Good luck!

I know, I'm pretty upset that I am a month out with complications already. I'm praying this is a one time fluke. I am having all of my ER visit and hospital stay records sent to my WL surgeon and hopefully I will get a clearer picture of what is going on in there.

If I ever experiance an episode like this again, I will not hesitate to have the band removed. I thought I was going to die, the pain was unimaginable. Having the band is certainly not worth reoccuring episodes like that.

Thanks to everyone and their input, at least I now know this is something that actually happens. :(
