Is a refill or a fill painful to have done? do they numb you up before they stick the needle in your side?
About the surgery itself, is it an outpatient proceedure? Do they give you pain meds to take home? How long is it usually until there is no longer any pain episodes (where you would need pain meds)?

My port is in the center of my abdomen (about 2 inches above my belly button).
I do not get numbed up prior to a fill ---- the fill is just a single stick, like an injection -- and the numbing would be a shot, too --- so, I don't see the point.

My surgeon does my fill****s my port first time every time.

My surgery was done out-patient (I was self pay) and I had an RX for pain meds before my procedure -- so it was filled and waiting for me at home.

I had my surgery on a Friday morning -- never took the pain meds.  I went home by about noon, rested in the afternoon, was up walking around my house that night.,

I took liquid Extra Strength Tylenol to sleep that night -- and for a few nights.

I was up and driving myself to the grocery store and Library by Saturday afternoon (24 hours after anesthesia).  I had a week off from work, but could have returned sooner.

I was 51 years old when I had my surgery and was about 130 pounds overweight.

My Surgeon and NP numb first but I think it makes them feel better than me lol.... I have never had a problem with fills and don't consider them painful...sometimes I feel a pressure (as if I pressed on my port) when they insert the needed but that is all (it looks worse than it is lol).

I had to stay overnight, only because it is was an insurance requirement but it is normally a outpatient proceedure.

I had my surgery on a Tuesday came home Wendsday and was out showing property on Thursday (someone drove me though because my Surgeons instructions were not to drive for a few days).

No pain meds because they upset my stomach....felt more like I had been kicked in the stomach than any type of internal pain. Just tylenol at night or if needed during the day.

My Surgeon gave me lots of pain meds and anti nausea meds to have on hand.

Keep in mind that pain is subjective, but I've never had anything worse than a minor pin***** pain from fills . . .

Thank you all, as you can guess, I am a real baby when it comes to pain of any kind. I wouldn't mind a shot in the stomache area, there is usually less pain in all this fat.

I took pain meds at night to sleep as I also have hiatal hernia repair and that hurt more than the band surgery. Overnight one night. No real problems. Worked from home half days the first week and then out and about like normal!

My surgeon numbs my port location with a spray so all you really feel is the "pressure". I was terrified the first time, but it was no problem.

I have not had to have another fill yet. 3cc in my 10cc and am not hungry for 6-7 hours after eating my cup of food!

Good luck.

I have had a few fills and 1 unfill and like Kath, my doc uses a shot to numb and one to fill, so it's one stick either way.  I was VERY nervous about my first fill, and even more so about my surgery.  Both went very easy.

As much as you will hear me complain about bands, I will say that fills are generally painless. I have seen a few bandsters   on here post about painful fills, but that is few and far between. Mine have never been painful. They numbed the area a couple of times prior, but it wasn't even necessary.
