I have experienced on and off this terrible, sharp feeling under my left ribcage @ night. I'm a belly sleeper and I have found that I can not sleep on my stomach with these pains! Does anyone know what this is or experienced the same thing? I called my Dr's office and was told it could be gas...But, i swear it does not feel like gas! P.S-It's on the opposite side of my port.

I just spoke to my Dietitian. She agreed that it may be trapped gas. She also suggested if we aren't moving our bowels regularly that, this can be the issue. I was told to try a little M.O.M. and see if it relieves the pain. I have to say I am not going to the bathroom regularly, so I will give the M.O.M a shot and hopefully that pain goes away and doesn't come back!!
Good luck Sirena, I hope you try the MOM and find that your discomfort goes away!! ::::Praying::::!

I think that pain on the left side is usually caused by Vegus nerve complications. There are many people on the failed band group on FB and OH that have this. You might want to join the groups.

Good luck!

HA!  I have the same thing and I have a sleeve!  It is pain that is really common in bands, sleeves, and DS.  Not sure about RNY.

Nobody has figured out for sure what it is.  Mine isn't sharp, but it is dull and constant.  A couple of years ago during a fluoro exam I asked my doc and he thinks in my case it is because scar tissue has bent my colon a little bit, instead of curved it is closer to an L shape in one little tiny area.  I have my doubts, too many of us have this pain, people of various WLS types.

Even though it is on the other side of your gut it could still be gallbladder, have you ruled that out?

I previously experienced this and it was suggested to me that it may be something called "splenic flexure syndrome." Essentially, gas gets trapped in the bend of the clon near the spleen (the splenic flexure). I found it helped to lie on my left side for a while to get the gas moving. Gas X can help and my MD also prescribed something called hyosciamine that helped (for the discomfort). I suspect this can be worse after surgery as more air gets pushed through the lower part of our system when it has a hard time escaping the upper part of the system via burping. I found that this issue was most associated with having my band too tight and with artificial sweeteners (which make me very gassy). Once I stopped artificial sweeteners and stopped keeping a too tight band, the problem resolved.

Thank you for your post!! It was really helpful to me. I didn't realize that the artificial sweetners could play a part in this!! I am cutting them out asap!!

The splenic flexure syndrome is definitely evil! Ha! Thank goodness the issue is now resolved.

Yo could try erythritol, I think the brand might be Sun Crystals? I've found it at whole foods in the past.
