I think so many of us with failed bands speak-out because when we were researching no one spoke negatively about the band. I spent a year researching different bariatric surgeries and saw some horror stories from DS & RNY but no one said boo about the bands. I speak up now because everyone deserves to hear it all. The band works for some, fewer than we were led to believe, but eventually, EVERYONE who has a band placed will have a second surgery. I nearly died from peritonitus when my band eroded. My health will never be the same. People ask me now about getting a band, people who want bands and I tell them to run like hell ! Dont get it .

I predict some day lots of attorneys will make lots of money on class action lawsuits. It's pretty clear that the band is a bad device. Zee, Nikki and Michelle all know of what they speak. None of us realized it when we got the band. I would even bet that most of us had a history of being successful at losing weight with diet and exercise on our own, and we had hoped that the band would be the bit of help that we needed to keep the weight off once it helped us lose it again. As for the IQ test that was suggested that's just laughable, especially considering the poster.

I think in a few yrs when you come on the OH band forum, instead of seeing ads for surgeons doing the band, you will be seeing attorney ads for the lawsuits and ads from Drs. for revisions.
When I was looking into different wls in 2007, everyone seemed to have nothing but good to say about the band. I knew the complications of RNY, gastric bypass, I was even told the chances of the band slipping, etc. However, I asked my surgeon, what were the chances of band slippage, erosion, etc. He told me the chances were EXTREMELY low, didn't even give me a number percentage. Silly me, trusting a surgeon...
Well, he never mentioned the chances of getting a hiatal hernia. Within the first year, lost 80 pounds, had the issues of food getting stuck. Learned to throw up while driving down a road. Heck, I became a pro at vomiting... I hear so many people that say they have no restriction, I had less than 2cc fluid in my band and couldn't swallow. Developed the hiatal hernia, took out all the fluid. I asked if they could just take the band out, he told me that with no fluid in it, it might as well be out, that I wouldn't have any more complications.
Well, I still had problems with foods getting stuck, I was still vomiting all the time.
December of last year, my band slipped. 4 days later, I was in emergency surgery where I almost died. It was tangled with my liver, luckily, they were able to untangle it without permanent damage to my liver. It had killed over half of my stomach and gangrene had already set in. They told me that when it slipped, it stopped ALL blood supply to my stomach.
What the band gave me... I NEVER lost all my weight, I gained a lot back, however, still down from the beginning. I have lost 2 teeth due to damage from constant vomiting and have damage to 6 more of my teeth (I used to have perfect teeth and now hate for anyone to see them). I have permanent esophagus damage, and I have been left with only half a stomach. I am still learning what foods my body can handle, trust me, it is a whole new learning experience after they cut out half of your stomach and you hadn't read anything beforehand about it. Not sure what my blood levels are at right at this current time since I don't have insurance to get it checked out, however, am so sore all the time, beginning to think I am developing fibromyalgia from all of this. I am right handed and for the past 3-4 weeks, it hurts just to move my right arm.
I have been left over 100k in debt, since like I said, I have no insurance. I have been talking with all the doctors, hospitals, etc., some of them are very helpful, the hospital that I was in for a week, including several days in ICU, wiped their bill off completely, but that still leaves me in debt since I started out in another hospital, then had to be transferred by ambulance. They wouldn't even let my boyfriend drive me when I asked if he could. Came to find out later, they didn't think I was going to make the 35 minute drive to the other hospital. Trust me, it would take a normal person an hour, but they were flying... LOL I guess that is why the ambulance bill alone is 1600 dollars...
Anyway, don't think that everyone fails the band.... I was the model patient, even my original doctor told me so.... I did everything right... The band failed me... My doctor failed me by not being completely upfront of ALL the risks... I failed myself by not doing even more research... If anyone is reading this that has not had the band yet, I would soooo advise not to get it... It is NOT worth it...

Hugs! I am so sorry for all you have been through! It's very scarry. Most bandsters think it's no big deal if the band doesn't work..............they'll just get it removed. They think it's "reversable". Just in the last 6 or 8 months I have heard several posts both on here and on FB about bandsters almost dying because of their bands.
Like you, I have no insurance. I am hoping that I don't have any complications other that the no restriction issue until I am able to get my band removed.
Your band has cost the most that I have heard so far. One of the ladie that contacted me almost 2 yrs. ago had spent $70,000 at that point. 20 for the band and then 50 for the complications after. At that time, she still had a non working band in here. So she will be facing even more expense from her band. I have often wondered how she is!
