Look, I don't put much weight (no pun intended) on what 99% of what folks complain about on these message boards and neither should anyone else.  It's not that I don't believe them or their issues, its just I would rather rely on my surgeon and his staff for information.

My only "beef" with folks who post the negative issues, is that many of the things that are stated are simply untrue, not fact-based, and quite frankly are only meant to cause fear-mongering.  Unless you are a doctor, or a surgeon, or over-seer of clinical trials, regarding Lap or Realize Bands, then you probably shouldn't make such ludicrous statements.  Being a patient does not make you an expert.

There is a particular person I am referring to (Not Maria!!--I love you Maria), but I choose not to call her out, but she has made some of the most outrageous and uneducated statements, all of which are completely unproved.  How do I know this?  Because I am a surgical technician and very familiar with the human anatomy, and when someone calls the stomach "soft tissue" and makes reference to "other organs getting damaged" I know she is making stuff up in order to influence other folks to form negative opinions.

Everyone has their opinions--good or bad, but I implore each of you to NOT make broad uneducated, unproved theories about the lap band or the realize band.   And if you have issues, questions or concerns, it might be best to speak with your surgeon and not rely on the people in this forum for real advice.
How can something someone has happen to them not be FACT ? So becasue we are not doctors we cant tell you our bands are crap ? humm are you aware there are CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS against nearly ALL The manufactors right now of the lap  band ?
Being a patient makes you knowledgeble of what is going on in  your BODY !!
I was the model patient, did what i was supposet to hit my goal in 10 months , 125 pounds. The day I hit my goal my band slipped and it was down hill after that. LESS Than a YEAR my band failed me it just took another year , almost 2 to figure it out and accept it !
Curious ? How long have you had your band ? I bet its still working just pefect for ya huh ?
Why are people making stuff up to you ? Just because people are saying negative things does NOT meant they are making it up , it means we are trying to HELP others not make a mistake.
I'll make a BROAD UN EDUCATED Statement then , THE BAND SUCKS ! DONT GET IT !

Well, I had  a couple of  kids too, but I don't think that makes me a Pediatrician.

Just look how defensive you're getting.  I was making specific references to certain individuals who most definitely make broad, unproven, statements.  If you feel you fall into that category, then please accept my apology.

I would believe the people LIVING with the band inside them instead of Surgeons and their staff. UNless they have a band themselves.  Its like a man telling a woman how child birth feels.  You don't know unless you've walked that path.  But I guess maybe I'm wrong, since no surgeon has ever made a mistake or given a misleading comment to a patient....I am one of the thousands of people the lap band has failed.  I have been in denial for the past 3 years until I saw a new surgeon that flat out told me "most lap bands fail" and than I found "failed lap bands" on fb and kept reading MY exact same story over and over.......  I'm having mine taken out in June before it becomes an emergency situation.

A lot of bandsters have been in denial. Sometimes it's just hard to face the truth. It really hurts to admit that all your hopes and dreams that you placed in the Lap-band are based on a lie that the manufacturers, and sometimes the Drs./band mills have told us.

Thanks for speaking out, and best of luck with your revision!

Ok good for you.  You should believe people living with the band.  I think that's a great idea.   I will seek advice from my surgeon and his staff, weighted with the exiperience of those living with the band.

Have a great weekend!!

So people should ignore the people who are actually living with the lap band every day, as opposed to a surgeon who looks at their inside anatomy for a mere hour and a half while their under the knife ?

I have had my band for almost 5 years, followed all the rules and lost weight and felt fine. Then all of the sudden I am hit with a severe case of gastritis in my "pouch" that refuses to heal with medication...this is NO FAULT of my own or anything I have done!!!! The truth for a lot of us is when you get so many years out from having your band placed your body simply starts to reject it. I am having my band out because I'm choosing not to live my life on strictly fluids and constantly sick, in and out of ER's. I am 35 years old with a 2 yr old that needs me to be healthy not sick in bed on a strictly liquid diet like I'm 90 years old!!! I am having my band out without a revision to another WLS....

It used to be implied..........or flat out said on this forum over and over that the band complications were b/c of noncompliance. It's just not true in most cases!

I hope your band removal goes well. Best of luck to you hun!

I think so many of us with failed bands speak-out because when we were researching no one spoke negatively about the band.  I spent a year researching different bariatric surgeries and saw some horror stories from DS & RNY but no one said boo about the bands.  I speak up now because everyone deserves to hear it all.  The band works for some, fewer than we were led to believe, but eventually, EVERYONE who has a band placed will have a second surgery.  I nearly died from peritonitus when my band eroded.  My health will never be the same.

Hi Peg,

I'm glad you lived to tell about it. I understand where you're coming from. It's a very traumatic experience to go through, to say the least.
