Do I have reflux?

Today is my first month surge-versary! The time goes so quickly…
I wonder if I have developed reflux… It may be related to the fact that I had hiatal hernia repaired during my band surgery.

When I eat (slowly and chew really well) I feel tightness under the breastbone. I often get the gurgling sound right between my breastbone and my throat especially if I lay down.

Yesterday I had difficulty falling asleep because when I laid down I was making loud gurgling sounds and I had a feeling that the food was coming up to my throat – had to use 3 pillows and slept in semi-sitting position. I have no “acidic" or bitter taste, so it’s not like heartburn. But it’s a feeling of a lump in your throat.
I’m leaving on vacation next week and will only see my Dr. in 2 wks. Not that he can do anything either because I have no saline in my band. Any similar experience? Any suggestions?

It sounds more like an esophageal motility issue to me. Maybe the food is not moving down into your stomach quickly enough and getting caught in the lower esophagus?

Good luck. Hope you can get an answer from your doc.

Congrats on the one month surge-versary.

Definitely call your doctor and make sure he knows you're leaving town.

Well, I never had any headprtburn or acidic taste or trouble sleeping.

I could eat sitting up in bed, lay down and sleep peacefully.

I occasionally had the lump in the throat feeling.....then, I had an episode of chest pain and after ruling out a heart issue, I had emendoscopy.

Turns out I had peptic ulcers and severe esophagitis caused by "silent reflux".

My gastroenterologist said that 35-40% of his patients with reflux have no real symptoms of heartburn or acid taste.

You could try taking 20-40 mg of omeprozole (over the counter reflux med****il you can see your doctor. It can take adds weeks to work.

Your doc may want to order an endoscopy or barium swallow test for you.
