This is not a happy story to tell.

I had my band removed last week.
Iam not a good story teller, so bare with me.
About three months ago I got bronchitis.   Went to my GP at least 4 times for treatment.   I had the worst coughing of my life.  It went on for about a month.  Sometimes, most every day really, when I coughed real hard I would gag and throw up.  Then about 10 days ago I coughed up blood. (lots of blood).  My DR. sent me to ER.  After 36 hours in hospital I was told my band had slipped and my stomach was pushed up.  Band had to come out.
Also was told I was dehydrated and my kidneys were barely working.   PLUS,,,, I had double pneumonia, thats where the blood was coming from.
I was in hospital 5 days, one sick puppy.    I have been home 4 daays and doing fine.. Just pure liquid diet for one week.    Iam not going to bash the band, ect., but I did nothing wrong on my part, and look at what happened.
I DID lose about 55 pounds or so on the band, but would not ever do it again.   If anyone has questions  I would try and answer them.

I am sorry you had to go thru this.

Are you considering revision?

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

Cheryl N.,
No, not thinking about revision.   I will try to keep weight off/down by diet. (That has worked so well in my past...???)

Hugs! It sounds like you went through hell. So glad you're home and feeling better. It must have been a very scary thing to go through!

Glad you're doing better!!

Let me ask, are you saying that having bronchitis, caused you to cough so hard that you displaced your band, or are you suggesting the band caused the bronchitis?  I'm confused why you're "anti-band" now.  Perhaps you're saying that band prolonged the bronchitis, which led to pneumonia?

Had you never gotten sick, would you still have your band removed?

Thanks!!

c-cubed,
As I was told, coughing hard and throwing up daily caused the band to slip.
Food from my stomach then got into my lungs which caused infection then pneumonia.   I had very bad heart burn, acid reflux & indegestion with the band, but would still have the band today if I had not gotten sick......

i am so glad you are doing better too.  Thank you for not hesitating to post your experience here.  I appreciate all the information.  I am doing well with my band and know of many many others not just on this site who are doing well long term but it is really important to know what *could* happen.    I have been fortunate healthwise for the past 20 months since I have had my band and havent been sick.  However, thanks to the experiences shared here, i plan on getting an emergency unfill if I have a cough or illness  longer than a few days.      Thats what *my* surgeon recommended way back in the beginning of my journey.  This is not to say something could still happen with my band, but keeping it loose while sick has helped many other banders.

Good luck with your revision!

Still with my lapband with no plans for revision. Band working well since

Thankyou for sharing with us and I'm so sorry you've had such a rough time! I can see where the band could indeed cause other issues if you were coughing that hard. I hope you are feeling much better soon!

I'm sorry. Unfortunately, you aren't the first I've heard of where the band ended up causing lung/breathing problems. I'm glad your OK, and hope you feel better.
