REALIZE Band on 03/27/12
 hello everyone,

so i went to my last appt on Friday before my surgery. my dr asked it i would prefer he lap band or the realize band. i picked the realize band, not because I knew more about it, but because it seemed less heavy duty than the other one. I asked him which he thought was better and he didn't give me an answer either way. Does anyone here have information on one being better than the other, or have any personal experiance they can share?

Thanks :)

I let my doctor select the one he liked using. I have the Lap Band.

Neither.   Go for bypass or sleeve.

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

My doctor also pick which band he used, I am not sure there is much difference in them. but it would not hurt to go to their sites and check it out.

Lapband - Jan 2009 weight goal reached with lapband. Revised to VSG- 1/25/16

I agree with Cheryl, neither but if I had to chose I'd go with the Realize as it seems to have somewhat fewer issues than the Allergan one.

Letting the doctor pick which is easier for him/her is the worst idea. What may be an easier or faster procedure for them, can make huge differences in lifestyle for us. Their job is over (and well compensated no matter what we choose) in an hour or two, but we live with the results for life.

My band was a nightmare, and if I can ever get a revision, it will only be to a sleeve or DS. I'm picking what will be best for ME this time, not easiest for my surgeon or what my insurance would rather pay for.

That's exactly the lesson I learned, too. I chose a surgeon based on availability and convenience.  I practically let him choose the surgery for me, as well.  What a nightmare that turned out to be.

My Doctor only uses Lap Band, he said that the Lap Band when filled fills outward where the Realize band fills and widens and you can not back fill the Realize he will not even see people who have the realize.
