Band Over Bypass

I am leaving tomorrow for my band over bypass with Dr. Aceves.  I had RNY in 2003 and lost 155 lbs, in 2007 I gained 100 back and then lost it the old fashion way in 2010.  I have steadily gained 30 lbs in the last 6 months and had an upper gi done because I would eat a whole meal and be starving in 45 minutes.  The upper gi showed that my pouch was large and the stoma had stretched.  I looked into revisions and decided the band over bypass would be the best fit for me.  Can anyone tell me about your experience with the band over bypass.  Has it worked, how was the weight loss, any problems etc.  I would appreciate any feedback.

We've already chatted so I won't repeat here, but, GOOD LUCK with the procedure tomorrow.  Email me over the weekend if you need anything. The procedure is a "piece of cake" compared to the RNY or my PS.  Also, didn't realize you were from Hockession, DE. I went to High School in Wilmington.

Good luck. I do know my surgeon did that surgery on someone that had the same situation and was very successful. Good luck to you!

How did it go?  Were you off work long? Feeling good?  How about the cost?

I need to do something, had RNY in May 2001, gained about half back and I am hungry ALL the time, even right after I've eaten a decent meal!

It went very well, the hospital and doctors were great!!  The minute we flew in to San Diego we were with someone from the hospital all the way through the process.  Had an English speaking patient coordinator that was with me all the way through.  Awesome experience!  I had it done on a Thursday and was back to work Monday, however, I work from home but have a high pressure job.  I was fine but then went back in to the hospital a week and a half later because I was exercising too much and too much fluid built up around my port....my mistake.  I was in for three days and missed those days of work.  I am doing great now, 4 weeks today and I have lost 25 lbs.  I have 28 lbs. to go.  Couldn't be happier.  I move on to solid foods on Saturday and am scared but excited!  Hope it all goes well.  I was in the same exact boat as you with gaining and hungry all the time.  I would be hungry after eating a huge meal in like 30 to 45 minutes.  When I had an upper GI done, they found I have a large pouch and a stretched stoma.  Food was going right through.  The cost of the surgery was $10,500 and then the cost of my plane ticket.  It was all inclusive and no hidden fees even for the hotel.  I would recommend Dr. Aceves to anyone.  If I were you I would start with an upper GI to find out what is going on.  If you have insurance they may pay for a revision.  Mine did not since it has a once in a lifetime bariatric surgery clause.  Let me know if you have any more questions.

Where did you find the surgeon to do this?  I am from Pennsylvania, would love to find something just like what you did only closer home.  I would LOVE to have this done.  I can't lose and trust me, I've tried!  The always hungry part just kills me!

I found him on here, he had come very highly recommended by many people on here.  There are several surgeons in New York City that do the band over bypass, I didn't find anyone in PA as I live on the DE/PA border.  The problem is the lowest cost I found in the states was $18,000 and they could not guarantee that there wouldn't be additional cost if I had to stay in the hospital longer or if there were other issues that came up during surgery.  Where I had mine done it was that amount no matter what happened.  I didn't have a problem in the world traveling to Mexico to save 10K.  It was worth it because I ended up having a hiatel hernia and two other issues when he got in there that needed to be fixed.  Additionally I had to stay an extra day in the hospital.  If I would have had this done here, it would have cost me an additional 5 to 10K

Hi,

Would you provide me with the information on where you had your procedure done?

I haven't been to this website in some time but I am happy I made the decision to check it today.  I thought I was the only one out there experiencing hunger after eating.  Matter of fact as soon as I was able to eat solid food I was able to eat more than the recommended amount which had me worried.  I never reached my goal weight of 140 lbs but did make it to 150 lbs and stayed there for a couple of years.  I am starting to gain back my weight (as of today up 22 lbs).  I have been on the same weight loss roller coaster trying to lose weight and I lose 5-7 lbs then the needle doesn't budge.  I was told to see a dietician by the facility where I had my surgery which is good advice but after reading your posts I think I might have a similar issue with the stretched stoma.  Did you decide on your own to do the BOB or was it suggested by your surgeon?  Thanks and I am happy to see that everything is working out for you.
