You know the saying if I only knew then what I know now? Would you do it again??? I am BMI 36 with sleep apnea and trying to decide between lap band vs. sleeve. Any regrets or opinions?

Lap Band on 01/30/12
I am a newbie, was BMI 50 with sleep apnea, HBP, hi cholesterol and borderline diabetic. I am 3 weeks post op with Lap Band and down 32 lbs. Happy, enjoying what I am eating, feeling much better as I have terrible arthritis in my hip, bad knee and recovering from two Achilles tendon strains (two years).

I am so happy to be feeling better!

I did not want my stomach cut and am willing to work!

Do what you are comfortable doing.

Knowing what I know now, probably so.  I have had good results, not excellent, but good.  So yeah, I think I would.

Never in a million years. The six months I was "happy" were not worth the 3 years of torture. If I had to do it all again I would get the VSG and be done with it.

Revised from band to sleeve on June 6th, 2012. Lost 48 pounds on my own in the 4 months prior to revision.

If I knew then, what I know now I would have gotten the Sleeve from the get-go and skipped all the band drama.

if i knew then what i know now i would never have had the band   what a piece of crap band that was.  it was horrible.  i had revison last October with RNY and wish I had done the RNY in the first place.  I cant believe how many people get revision surgery after thie band fails them or complications force the band removal.  My band gave me a hiatl hernia to top off the net weight gain I had.  Those things are terrible inho.

SandyF...you bring up a good point...if they have not taken RNY off the market with the MANY deaths, and issues it causes, why would they take the band off the market?

In Europe, the lap band is the number one method of weight loss surgery and has been for over 20 years, could it be .....Americans just cannot adapt with lifestyle change and following rules? I am not being smart but it is something to look at. Why do 50 percent of Americans eventually have to get their bands removed when Europeans don't?

I think this needed to be debated.....

I woud like to weigh in on your commente regarding Europe.  First of all MANY of the surgeries done there were on Americans who go there for cheaper cost and self pay surgeries so the complications or successes are not added to their stats.  Secondly, the European obesity percentage is less than 4% of the total European population! U.S. is approaching 40%.  In the countries with weight loss surgery 'vacations' like Germany and India (which the latter not offering the band at all anymore) band surgeries are the least requested.  Believe me if the band would have helped me I would be all for it but my obesity was not caused by shoving donuts down my mouth, it was hormonal and the rny surgery addresses that issue and finally I am able the decrease my stored fat albeit very slowly even though I only eat 500-700 cals a day!  Before the rny I would eat 1200- 1500 and gaine 7 lbs a year for 12 years!
