Hi Everyone,
Day 4 of my pre op diet (3 protein shakes, 2 cups veg) and really having a hard time. I am light headed, soooo moody and very emotional. I keep questioning if this is worth it? Worries me because this is only the beginning. Did anyone else experience this? Questioning if you made the right decision? I want this more than anything, so I'm thinking it's just the lack of food and sleep that is making me feel like this.

 Hi,

My first week of the pre-op diet was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Like yourself I questioned if it was worth it and I also questioned whether or not I was strong enough for this process. The first few days was the hardest (I was only allowed to have 3-4 protein shakes), but I lost 19 lbs before surgery. You can make it through this, it will be worth it in the end.

I had warned my boyfriend, family and friends that I would not be in the best mood for a while. To my shock everyone was very supportive and understanding.

Not sure what your doctor allows you to have, but I kept something in my mouth....hot cups of chicken broth, sugar free popcicles, real apple juice, etc. Apple juice helped me when I was feeling very woozy....a little sugar boost. Otherwise, I stuck to sugar free drinks like Crystal Light.

You will make it through. It's hard.

Try dividing your protein shakes in half and drinking them more often throuhout the day.

Remind yourself that hearing your tummy rumble is a totally "lost" feeling that normal people still feel. We ain't normal right now!

Hope this helps!

Yes and no, I found out on day 5 that I could have clear chicken broth and a small (like a piece of string cheese) protein snack in between my shakes but I still had to make sure to get my shakes in. I would have my 2 am shakes (I had them approx 3 hrs apart) then when I would go to lunch w/ my co-workers I'd either have chicken broth or a piece of cheese. I'd have another shake before I left work (I was working 10 hour days) and then depending on how hungry I got I'd have either broth or cheese (whichever I didn't have @ lunch). Shortly before I went to be I'd have my 4th shake.

I had good days and bad days. I'm 1 week post op and still having good and bad days. The first 3 days I wasn't hungry at all, now I'm starting to get hungry again but am still on the shakes. I won't have my first fill for approx 5 weeks, so right now I can't wait till I can start soft protein cuz I'm thinking that I may not have too much swelling at the moment so the shakes aren't staying in the pouch as long.

You need some fake chili. Take a can of beef broth, pour it in a pan. Add a splach of tomato juice. Cut a green pepper and an onion in large pieces and add them. Add some chili powder and any other seasoning you would add to chili (watch the salt, roth is salty). Simmer until veggies are soft, then strain out the veg. Eat piping hot with a spoon (eating with a spoon helps it feel like a "real food" experience).
Fake chili saved my butt when I was on my preop diet. I was 2 weeks, clear liquids only.

At this point that fake chili sounds delicious!!! But I am not allowed broth. Only 3 protein shakes and 2 cup of fresh veg. That is all! :(
