Newbie here! I am on my two week prep for surgery and they say chicken, fish and veggies only. So are tomatoes considered fruit or veggie in this case?

I myself have always put it in the fruit category. I would probably not eat them on a pre op diet. You can ask your doc or dietitian.

I always think of them as a veggie, LOL  I would take them off until you can call your Dr's office. I don't believe there is a lot of natural sugar in tomatoes, but what do I know. Good luck on your upcoming surgery and let us know how it goes!!

TECHNICALLY, they are a fruit (because they have seeds) but are more commonly referred to as a veggie. When in doubt if you can have them, ask your doc.

You are probably on the Liver Shrinking Diet which limits your carb intake.  Did your doctor tell you not to have corn, potatoes or beets?  Those are all veggies with very high sugar contents.  I would stay away from tomatoes until you're done with your pre-op diet.  Our Livers house the glucogen that is left from eating carbs.  It swells and in order to have our Lapbands placed properly the liver needs to be smaller and easily managed.

Thank you all for your help. I have been eating beets too, so I will quit that for now too. I know the no corn, peas and dried beans, but the did not specify any others. I have left all the bread and other starches. This will definitely help me!
