Lap-Band Removal

I have had my lap-band for 6 years now.  The first year was great but after that everything went downhill with it.  I am wanting to get the band removed because its not doing anything for me and i hate the idea of having this foreign object in my body.  A friend of mine who is getting the sleeve actually told me the other day that the surgeon said they are looking at not doing the lap-band anymore at least where i live.  I am looking for anyone that has had it removed and if your insurance paid for it and if so what kind of information did they need.

Thank you!

Ask on the VSG bard. There are quite a lot of people who have revised from the band.

Kate

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Some other OH resources and experiences about getting your band out can be found at the Failed Lap Band group and the Revisions board.

You'll have to talk to your insurance provider to see if they have a one WLS per lifetime provision, or if they'll cover revisions.  Sometimes, they will want proof of mechanical failure of the band before approving.  But maybe still having a qualifying BMI and comorbidities would be enough to qualify.

You'll only know for sure by talking to your insurance company, so that's where I'd start.

I'm sorry your band isn't working for you--just letting you know you're not alone!

Good luck!

My insurance did pay for band removal. It was considered a matter of medical necessity.

Are you having pain or discomfort stemming from the band?  That might constitute medical necessity.

Two doctors have told me that the lapband is being phased out gradually due to the high rate of complications.

Good luck to you, Kate. I hope it all works out well.

I too feel the band is doing nothing for me. I was never in a sweet spot for more than a few weeks here and there. I now have my band very very loose. I can eat what I want. However, I don't have a desire for another surgery to remove it. If I have complications, I will probably go that route.

I can't afford to get mine out at this point, no insurance, but did have it emptied in an attempt to keep any further damage from happening. Try the failed band board and the VSG board they both have lots of helpful ex bandsters.

I've got a band that's has NEVER worked. Believe me, there are a lot of us out there. I can't afford to have mine removed or revised at this time.

Good luck!

Just wondering... keeping you in my thoughts and hoping you're doing OK.

Hey!  Thanks for thinking of me.  I am going to see the surgeon on the 12th.  So, we will see what he says.  I just dont know.  Today i went to lunch with my mom and she said she would like to see me get the bypass.  I am just not sure whats going to happen.  Just have to wait and see what the doctor says.

Good luck with your upcoming appointment.  Have you been doing research on WLS options at all? Maybe the VSG would be a good fit for you, too?  I hope your doctor can help you out.

Just wanted to check in on you on accounta I'm nosy.
