eating with non-banded people

My friend Christine is German and she eats with both the knife and fork held in her hands the entire time she eats as opposed to placing the knife back down when she is finished cutting her next bite of food. I like to emulate her when I am eating with her.

Yes, American servers are always asking me if I am done eating countless times during my meal. Just last night a server asked me on three separate occasions if I was finished with my meal. Sigh...

99% of the time I can find someone who is willing to share an entree with me, which is great because I can't even finish my half of the half. I am " The Leftover Queen "

We learn that very early. There are a lot of rules, like when you put your silverware down on the plate parallel to each other, knife blade pointing toward fork means you are done with your meal. If you put knife and fork in the 20 min to 8 o'clock position on the plate means you didn't like the food.. Germans !!

Now in the UK, when finishec,  you put your knife and fork precisely parallel and close together. Anything else means not finished!!

Trouble with social or business eating is trying to join in conversation! Someone says something, you jump in to reply and, without thinking, swallow down anything in your mouth at the time.
