Weight Bias Outrage

A few months ago, I joined the OAC (Obesity Action Coaltion (obesityaction.org). They send me e-mails with interesting news about many aspects of obesity, especially political. Yesterday I received a message asking OAC members to protest the weight bias expressed by Dr. John Kelly in a "humorous" article in a publication called Outpatient Surgery.

I've heard a lot of nasty remarks made by other people about obese people, but this guy takes the cake. I'd like to deliver the cake directly to his face. Here's a link to more information:
http://www.obesityaction.org/gettinginvolved/biasbusters/exa mples/outpatientsurgeryarticle.php

I invite you to join me in telling this guy where he can stick his humor. It's bad enough that obese people suffer from a chronic, incurable disease, but to suffer insults like this from medical professionals is an outrage.

Our support group leader sent this out to everyone yesterday.  It's hard to believe he's a professional and actually thinks he's being funny???  And then to have it published.  I hope they both get assulted with tons of mail.  Shame on them and anyone who had anything to do with that article.

The premise of his article, worries about performing surgery on the obese, is fine. As a paramedic I have experienced truly horrific complications in treating and transporting the smo. Often, in the medical arena, we use gallows humor to relieve the stress of a very difficult outcome, but never like this. His treatment of the subject as humor is truly offensive in so many areas. Not even attempting to deal with his purported topic with any serious intent is far beyond even that. He is not trying to educate his peers, he is simply trying out his new stand up routine. As far as I am concerned it is not only offensive beyond the max, but just low and tacky. This guy is not a professional. The publication that allowed this type of trash should have known better. Would they allow racial humor? Disability humor? Ethnic humor? No, they would not. GRRRRRs..... ok, Jean, now I am really mad!

I have to go write some nasty letters. I am only just getting started! I am often willing to give the benefit of the doubt in some similar situations, but not this one. I just became an activest, and I am one of the LEAST activist or confrontational people I know.

Wow. As a healthcare professional, I am ashamed that he would make such comments, and allow them to be published. It shines a poor light on doctors and other healthcare providers. I have let them both know my thoughts on their outrageous behavior.

Hi Jean,
I read the article and was floored.
I do not care what mans reason for using these remarks was it was wrong and there was another way he could have gotten his point across I did write him and I will be writing the publisher as well. I am so sick of people thinking it is ok to humiliate and embarass people who are suffering with obesity. Thanks for sharing the link
