5 days Post op
Adjustable Gastric Band on 10/14/11
Hello, All!
I'm a newbie post op! I have survived the post op abdomen gas pain!! I do have to admit...that was rough!! I am on a full liquid diet until Friday, Oct, 21. Then I get to go to puree food for 3 weeks!! I had weak spell last night, wanting a sandwich so badly!! I know this will get better. I have to keep telling myself that.
I have been reading different posts on this wonderful website for a few weeks prior to surgery. The posts have been very helpful. But I have questions, what am I to supposed to expect? I mean, after I am allowed real food. What do people do if they have an obstruction?? What did everyone eat on the puree phase? Are there any good post WLS cookbooks? Or any good "on the go" foods?
Please give me all your feedback! I'm interested in it all!!

Congrats on surviving so far! I wasn't sure I would survive the gas or the starvation.
I whined a lot but I made it. If you can stay the course you will have strengthened yourself for the journey ahead. It is important to follow your surgeons plan to the letter not only because you are still healing but also to geve yourself the tools necessary to succeed. Each time you turn away from something, like the sandwich, you gain toughness. It takes a lot of that toughness to succeed with your band.
Jean M. has just published a cookbook that is a good one, especially for those who like variety. There are all sorts of recipies out there for when you are allowed real food. It will be a trial and error to determine the things you will be able to tolerate and that will change with time, too.
When I got to mushies I lived on fat free refried beans, cottage and ricotta cheese, cream soups, Quaker weight control oatmeal, etc. I used melted cheese on everything. Greek yogurt is also an excellent food because of the protein in it.
If you should have a stuck episode as you go on to solid foods you will simply go back to liquids for 24 hours then softer foods then back to solids. If after surviving the post op diet you have to go through that it will make you become very careful about eating slowly, tiny bites and chewing well. Believe me.
Many people pack a small cooler when they are going to be out and about. I always drop a protein bar in my purse, and cheese sticks if I am to be longer. I can eat about anything now, so it isn't as hard as in the beginning. I have even put a package of a protein soup like Unjury's creamy chicken soup in a container and gotten ho****er at a gas station, like for tea. I am willing to pay for that convenience. My only problem is that if I am feeling pretty vulnerable I am best not to go into any type of convenience store setting. Too many temptations.
I think others will be able to give you many suggestions to help you get through these first couple of months. Experiment as you go.
God bless, Sue

This is my second time around for my band (just had it replaced). I am still on liquids but I found if I use fruit especially pumpkin in my protien shakes it sticks around much longer! Back when I was on mushies (I can not wait till next week when I will be there again!) I ate tons of fat free refried beans like granny with smashed avacado. Hummus, califlower mashed potatoes (try to stay away from the real stuff!). But I agree with granny again getting Jeans books are a MUST! I did not have them the first time around but this time I invested and they are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO worth it! Makes you realize or remember for my case that you are not alone and everything you are going thru we all experiance! Good luck!

Thank you, both for your replies!
I had not thought of refried beans!!! Once I read that, I got excited!!! A real food!!
It's the small things in life that are so exciting!! I never thought I would get excited to be able to eat mashed potatoes, refried beans, and scrambled eggs!!
I just snuck some baby food a little early. That doesn't seem like puree to me. It's more like a full liquid. It still makes me ready for Friday! I think I may boil some eggs tomorrow to have them for Friday!!
Here's another question....should I weigh myself daily on my scale or just go by the doctors? They are a couple pounds different.
I have been looking over Jean's books and others on Amazon.com. I believe I will have to check those out. I also just ordered some protein from unjury.com. Is Unjury a good one to use? I have been using the Pure Whey with is 3 oz of about 42-45 grams of protein at once. But when I drink it, I feel ugh the rest of the day. I know I need to get the protein, but I don't want it if it makes me feel like poo the rest of the day.
What do ya'll think??

It seems like the exact foods Drs classify as full liquid and puree can vary slightly. I am just 4 days post op...and I was allowed to add Greek Yogurt (without any fruit) in yesterday as it has so much protein to help me hit that goal. I was also allowed to add ricotta cheese, sugar free pudding and strained soups in this phase...right now, it is cumbersome...but I am using all of my measuring cups and found some great 4 oz marked cups at Publix!
I am also enjoying sugar free jello...so I feel like I have a good variety of options that taste like "real food"
I did start drinking my whey protein WAY (okay, like 4 weeks) before surgery...and I have found that I can tollerate it MUCH better if I mix it with milk or Almond Milk...NOT WATER...I am looking forward to puree...as I had a HUGE success with putting a mashed banana in with the protein...I am sure Pumpkin will do the same!!!
