Can someone explain again...
why we aren't supposed to drink carbonated beverages? I'm almost 8 months out and my Diet Coke addictions was really bad. I've managed to stay away from it but I'm wondering just how bad it would really be to sneak one occaisionally? I'll talk to my doc next visit but I thought I would throw the question out there and see what you were all told as to why it's off limits.
some say it will stretch the pouch out but I find that hard to believe I know people that has drank it on occasion and the pouches never stretched out and they are yrs out from surgery the lap band and gastric .
My doc told me , its more the empty calories most docs dont like . Its full of calories and such things and we need to get our calories from food .
I know several people that have a Pepsi or even diet coke once a week they put it over ice so its not as fizzy and have no problems.
I haven't had a soda almost a yr now , I did try it about two months ago and it was so dang sweet to me I couldn't stand the taste of it lol. That is one thing I have no desire to even drink after that one taste :o) .

Originally the standard rule was no carbonation. But I understand this was a just- in- case scenario which has not been supported by evidence. You need to think very hard before breaking any rule your doc gave you but many docs no longer tell bandsters this.
With my own doc's permission, I have always had carbonated dinks. But I pour them over ice and let them stand before I drink them.
Champagne is hard! So very fizzy and ice would be sacrilege! So I take that very, very slowly!

I've never been a big soda drinker, but I do have a Diet Coke ever so often. I even use a straw ;o)
When I have just gotten a fill and am a little on the tight side, it can cause gas and some pain. I don't know if it stretches the pouch or can cause it to errode....
I have noticed a time or two, that I am sometimes (not always) able to eat more on days I have had carbination. So maybe it does stretch a little bit...or maybe just turned out that way on that particular day....

the gas from the carbination can be extremely painful! I always have to pour mine into a glass.
And before you do this think about artificial sweetners and how they jack with your metabolism and sweet tooth (if you have one).
I drink regular soda now - but because it is regular - I really think about what I've had to drink and calories and what not!

I used to be a Diet Coke addict too. And I too was told to avoid carbonated beverages. Some people call them "osteoporosis in a can" because whatever makes them carbonated leaches calcium from the bones. The artificial sweeteners are kind of scary too. But the main reasons I avoid them now are that the carbonation is uncomfortable - makes me want to burp, but I can't seem to burp - and the Coke burns when it goes down.

Everyone is telling you all the same answers, and they are all correct, that's why we are told not too. Some Dr's say don't worry about it but in long run each of those have been shown that all that carbonation is a bad thing. The ONLY carbonated soda like thing I have found does not bother MY band in small doses... is SF Red Bull. the fizz is there but not nearly that you would find in a soda, even then its a rare thing and its Sugar Free, AND I take my sweet time drinking it having to be careful because it can interrupt the times of eating with leaving the time between food and drink. I was a Mt Dew Addict! Like 3 liters a day! Now, I have not had a Mt Dew since November 30, 2008, threw a divorce party for it and I. It was ROUGH not drinking it at first much like breaking up with someone you love.... lol yes I know it sounds silly but its true... my signature for a long time even read.... "The divorce is final, Mt Dew can keep the can.... I'm getting RID of mine!" (My "can" was a size 30 at that time) :) Now, 3 yrs later... I don't even miss him :)

Interesting how people react differently to carbonation.
Luckily I never tried it after the band and don't miss it.
I do use a straw and my doctor said it was okay. I have no problems with it so I must not get too much air. The straw allows me to drink more. Just my quirk.
