Hi every1 im new here and going for my coseltation on the 29th of this month. I was posting on the sleeve forum for a whille but i just found out that medicare does not cover the sleeve. My choice is the gastric bypass or the lapband and i guess what it boils down to is the lap band i dont feel like the bypass is my thing. My heart was really set on the sleeve. I hear bad stuff about the band. Hoping someone can make me feel better.i weigh 259 and this weight has to come off regardless. How does the band work for some1 with hypothroidism and going through menepause?

Theoretically speaking, a restrictive only procedure is not going to fix or affect a metabolical disorder. It will only affect how much food you are eating.

No surgery is going to help hypothroidism, only meds will.

I can't speak to your question about hypothroidism, but I had my band placed when I was 51 and peri-menopausal ----- and went from 284 pounds to 154 pounds in the 18 months that I went from 'peri' to 'full blown' menopause.

I am 5 foot 6 inches -- and went from size 26 to 8

No co-morbidities before my surgery --- basically healthy, except for the morbid obesity

I have hypothyroidism and have already gone through menopause. I will be having the surgery some time next month. Just waiting to do the financing.

I did a lot of research on  wls and came to the conclusion that regardless of all the horror stories the lap band is the one for me. I have seen horror stories about all types of wls.

The surgeon did not feel that there would be a problem for me since my meds keep my thyroid under control.

They are not horror stories, they are our real life experiences.

No clue on the hyperthyroidism.

I was in SURGICAL menopause when I was banded.  Absolutely no HRT (hormone replacement therapy).

Started at 383, this morning I'm 159.2 (before breakfast..lol).  I've been banded 2.5 years and no complications at all other than being a little too tight in the spring of 2010.. a slight unfill fixed that.

Best of luck to you.

I've had great success with the lap band.

 I would highly recommend it!

I was banded 4 years ago and have been at goal for about 1 1/2 years.  It works great.  I had great success because I exercised.  The more that came off the more I exercised.  I started at 271 - but lost to 250 before my surgery.  I no longer have those food cravings and want to eat any sweet treat or carb or ice cream that is in the house.  In fact, I used to not have things in the house because even if I froze them I would find a way to eat them!  No longer.  I am in control with my helper the band.  Good luck to you.
