I couldn't get to that site, so I'm not SURE what was being calculated, but...in the world of wls, the standard number is percentage of EXCESS weight lost.

Calculating that is simple, but it takes three steps...

First, how much excess weight did you have to start with?
starting weight - goal weight = excess weight
300 (starting weight)  - 160 (your goal weight)  = 140 (your original excess weight)

Then, how much weight have you actually lost?
starting weight - current weight = weight lost
300 (starting weight) - 240 (current weight) = 60 (weight lost)

Finally, make a fraction and turn that into a percentage...or, for those who don't speak math,
the weight you lost  divided by your original excess weight

60 / 140 = 0.428 blah, blah, blah or 43%

So a 300 pound person who SHOULD weigh 160 and is currently weighing 240 has lost 34% of his excess weight.

In the world of wls, a wls is usually considered a success when the patient loses 50% of his or her excess weight.

If anyone needs help with this, I'm available.

Hey thanks for posting this, I am a math reject (my husband makes fun of me b/c I still use my fingers and don't even get me started on fractions), but this was easy to follow and even I was able to figure it out!

I have lost 68% of my excess weight! WOO HOO!

My husband is functionally innumerate.

He is 58 years old, retired and has been in community college for four years now because he had to go back to Square One for math.  He finished all his other classes two years ago...but he's still going step-by-step through the math.  He is persistent, but totally convinced he cannot do it and he does just great and then freezes on the tests.  He may spend the NEXT four years there...but he'll eventually get it.

But then, I'm not good at what HE does well...so it's not like I'm not gonna keep him.

256 - 145 = 111 excess weight

256 - 174 =  82 pounds lost

82 / 111 = 0.738...  = 74%

You have lost 74% of your excess weight.
