Hair loss is not caused by the type of weight loss surgery you choose.

Telogen Effluvium and Other Effluviums

Some hair loss conditions go by the name "effluvium," which means an outflow. Effluviums characteristically affect different phases of the hair growth cycle.

Hair follicles on the scalp do not continuously produce hair. They cycle through a growth stage that can last two or more years, then regress to a resting stage for up to two months before starting to grow a new hair fiber again. At any time on a healthy human scalp, about 80% to 90% of the hair follicles are growing hair. These active follicles are in what is called the anagen phase. That leaves up to 10% to 20% percent of scalp hair follicles in a resting state called telogen, when they don't produce any hair fiber.

What are the trigger factors for TE? The short answer is many and varied. Classic short-term TE often happens to women soon after giving birth. Called postpartum alopecia, the sudden change in hormone levels at birth is such a shock to the hair follicles that they shut down for a while. There may be some significant hair shedding, but most women regrow their hair quickly.

Similarly, vaccinations, crash dieting, physical trauma such as being in a car crash, and having surgery can sometimes be a shock to the system and a proportion of scalp hair follicles go into hibernation. As the environmental insult passes and the body recovers, the TE subsides and there is new hair growth.

the lapband has no malabsorption or vitamin loss.  If you don't eat your protein first and run out of room in your tummy, you can risk losing your hair.  I eat my protein first - and my hair is longer and better than before I got banded.  I also have great fingernails - they grow so fast, I have to cut them weekly since I am a NICU nurse.

I have a ton of hair loss! I am eating protein first and getting in 60-80 grams of protein.

There is no rhyme or reason to this.  I have had major surgeries in the past and not lost any hair.  It's not the protein because I get in between 80 and 100 gms a day.  Just lately, a little over 5 months out, I've noticed more hair in the drain.  I have long hair and it's pretty thick so it's not a concern yet.  But I can see it become one if this continues.

I think it has a lot to do with the person.  On the flip side, my nails are stronger than ever, when they used to crack some and split prior to surgery.  I am afraid there is not a heck of a lot you can do about this in the long run.

I had both the lap band and the VSG and experienced hair loss with both. As others have said, the hair loss is not dependent on protein intake or type of surgery. I have pretty thick hair and no one even noticed the hair thinning.

Best of luck!

It's what Pumpkin said and your regular hair growth cycle. Surgery, protein and biotin have nothing to do with it. It either will happen or it won't. Myself I've never lost hair with any surgery. Thank goodness because I've had over 14 in the last few years! I'd be bald as a cue ball! Even if you do lose some you won't go bald or anything and it'll grow back in a few months.
As far as vitamin loss the band doesn't cause malabsorbtion so we don't need alot of extra vitamins. Tho because we eat so little we do need a good daily vitamin and some docs have you take them twice a day just to be extra sure we get all of what we need.

Hun hair loss should NOT be the determining factor in which WLS to choose! The EFFECTIVENESS of the WLS should be the determining factor!!!

That being said.........as far as the vitamins, the band is malabsorptive as is VSG. You will notice on the band forum a large number of very unhappy bandsters that have not been successful with the band. If you look on the VSG forum, you will find the majority of them are extremely happy with their VSG, and much more successful!

Choose your WLS wisely!
