I am looking to lose 200+lbs and was thinking of getting lap band but my doctor strongly advises me to recon cider to bypass. I am torn because of the change to my anatomy, the unknown food restrictions and the surgery being final. Please

I have to agree with your doc, if you have that much to lose you will need more than the lap band to lose it all. The band is the slowest and least effective WLS and for many of us it never works at all. Tjhere is another surgery that might be better and that is the VSG. I urge you to really read about all 4 major surgeries the band, RNY, VSG and the DS. All have pros and cons but believe me if you have the band chances are you will end up having to have another surgery when it fails as so many others have found out. Yes there are a few who have lost over 100 lbs but they arew the exception rather thsn the rule. Listen to your doc he knows what he's talking about.

I agree. Check in to the VSG procedure. I had the lapband 4 years ago and at the time I was self-pay and could not afford the RNY. My Dr. also encouraged me to have the RNY. I am looking into revision to VSG. I lost 124 pounds with my band. I have gained 50 back and terrified that I will gain more. I'm very careful about what I eat because I have no restriction with my band. I had most of the water taken out due to chronic reflux problems. I have a lot of guilt issues I deal with because I encouraged many of my friends to get the band (when they asked how I lost the weight) most of them have not been successful with their bands.

Hi I am in the same situation as you. I have 200 lbs to lose and my doctor did suggest the VSG . However I decided to stick with the band. I am going to dedicate myself to losing the weight with lap band but If its not working then I will go back and get a different surgery... My concern is the same as yours but in the end I am not comfortable with the idea of having my insides altered like that plus it is not reversible .... I would rather exhaust all routes before gping down that path...that's my 2 cents

I believe it states on Allergans website that the estimated weight loss with the band is 55 % at three years out. So you're looking at a little bit over 100 lbs at three years out. It's slow and it's hard work and I don't recommend it. Your also at a high risk for having a second surgical procedure. Unless you think going under the knife is an experience that should be enjoyed twice.....think about having the DS or the sleeve surgery.

Well, I am one of the exceptions.  There are more than several here.  I see them every day on OH.  Anyway, I am 3 1/2 years post banding and you see I've lost over 300lbs.  It can happen with the LapBand.

I was self pay because my insurance refused to pay for the Band because my BMI was so high.  They said, I needed a different WLS.  I refused to have anything other than the Band.  So I paid cash and got it.

Everyday, I am thankful for my Band.  I have had NOT one problem with it.  I have had few slime episodes and have vomited very few times.  I am not perfect, but I was determined and very very fortunate.

My LapBand saved my life.  I am a new person today.  I've had my plastic surgery to get rid of the excess skin left after losing so much weight and I feel and look better than I did in my 20's.

It's not the easiest of WLS's but it's something that has worked for many.  I agree with the others - research all of the procedures available and find out which is best for you.  But know that if you do decide on the LapBand - that there are those out there who have been successful with it!

I also am one that has been banded and was at almost 500 pounds prior of the time of surgery. I have lost double of what was expected with my band and to date am down 10 pant sizes and over 30 points in my BMI, as well as losing 300 pounds. It is possible but will take dedication to yourself and the band! I was encouraged to do the bypass but wanted the band, its been a rough road but it is possible! Best of luck in your decision.

Hun the band works for SOME, it does not work for MOST long term. I would not recommend the band to my worst enemy.
