1st post op doc appt went well, but still a little frustrated.

Had my first post-op visit with my surgeon today.  (3 weeks post-op -- 10 days liquid and the rest on soft foods)  I'm healing nicely, and I'm allowed to slowly start introducing solid foods...the key word being slowly, and of course chewing well.

I've lost almost 14 pounds so far.  Spread it out over three weeks, and that sounds like a good start, but I know from weighing myself that I lost at least 12 of that in the first week.  Not even two full pounds over the next two weeks is a little disappointing.  I've been eating high protein and doing some walking when I feel up to it and eat around 800 calories per day.  And that's without feeling much restriction!

I go back in 6 weeks to talk about a first fill.  Sooner if I feel I really need it.  And at this rate, I just may.

My research has shown me that this is pretty common, and I'm right on track with the band.  *sigh*  I guess my expectations were too high maybe.  I don't know...lots of mixed feelings today.

Thanx for listening...just wanted to talk with those of you who have been there, done that.

Sounds like you are off to a great start! It is a time for healing still at the point you are at. Make proper food choices til you start getting fills and you will be surprised at even as slow as it may seem to you, the results that you will get. Protein is the key, stay hydrated and keep moving. Best of luck with your journey, You can do this just have patience!! :)

Don't be so hard on yourself!  You're still healing and your body is going, "What the heck is going on?!"  It's wondering where all that wonderful food has gone and just may be holding on to whatever calories you give it.  You will lose the weight!  1-2 lbs a week is healthy and reality.  Some weeks it may be more, some weeks none at all.  That's the way this journey goes.

Jus****ch your carbs and get your protein in first at every meal.  You'll be fine.  I did 800-1000 calories a day for a year and lost 115 lbs.  If I can do it, so can you!

Don't get a fill unless you are hungry between meals.  It's not all about restriction.  Just having the band around your stomach should start help lessen hunger without a fill.   Focus now on the quality of food you choose.  For me the quality was just as important as the quantity.  If you can change what you eat as well as how much you'll be golden!

Best~

Initial rapid loss is as the body accesses glycogen, water soluble fat available for rapid access, i.e. Energy bursts of flight or fight.

Once it dawns on our body that we are going to carry on eating less, it needs to replenish this store. But, being water soluble, it stores water as well. So even if you are losing fat, you are at the same time replenishing glycogen. Hence an apparent stop of loss.

I look at it this way.  You lose, rapidly at first.  Then every once in a while your body stops to catch up and regroup itself.  You are still often firming up and losing inches.  You will notice it in your clothes IF you are still following the rules and exercising, even when the scales are moving very slowly.  The first few weeks, it's fun to weigh almost daily, but for your own sanity give that up.  Weigh once a week, on the day of your choice at this point.  I even gave up the scale and weighed only at my doc's office for a couple of months till I got a better handle on it.  Now I weigh once to twice a week and I'm almost 8 months out.  Good Luck to you!

You might want to re-think going in for an early fill. It is not recommended. It's been almost 2 yrs. since I was banded, and I really can't remember the reason for waiting 6 wks. at this point. Maybe some of the other bandsters can elaborate on that.

Good luck!

If you're not hungry and still losing weight (an average of 2 lbs/week is great), you might want to wait...save the fills for when you really need them.

I remember a post-op appointment during which I indignantly told the PA, "I didn't lose weight last week, and this week I gained a pound!" I felt like it was the end of the world, and she just smiled. At the time I thought she was being insensitive. Now I realize she'd heard that a million times before. So...you are not alone. And in truth, you're doing very well. The early post-op days are for healing, not weight loss.

Hang in there!

Yes only gewt a fill if you really feel like you NEED one. I declined my 1st scheduled one but was for sure ready by my next appt. and remember it is always better to stay on the loose side rather than too tight.
