Fire Drill at work
I used to dread these. There are 7 floors in our building. I'm on 6. Knees, ankles & low back used to hurt just getting down the stairs. Going up? imagine about 450 people all trying to use small elevators to get back to their desks all at once. I'd wait. And I'd wait. And I'd wait. There were stairs of course, but I could barely make it to the 2nd floor w/out praying for death.
There was a fire drill this afternoon. One knee was a little sore going down the stairs. As soon as we reached our designated sites, the drill was over. Turned around & came back. I was following everyone to towards the elevator & looked at the group heading for the stairs. It's been two years since I've tried walking up those stairs.
Figuring I can stop at the 2nd floor & ride the elevator the rest of the way, I headed for the stairs.
Floor 2... not feeling bad at all. Pretty easy actually.
Floor 3... might need to slow down a bit but not breathing heavy.
Floor 4... still don't feel like I need to head for the elevator
Floor 5... elevator would be nice now - paused at the landing to get my breath
Floor 6... Holy @#$#@$!!!!! I made it!!! And I wasn't to far behind my coworkers either. One of them slowed down a bit & walked the last flight with me. I just felt awesome. I had no idea I could do that. I'm going to start taking the stairs in the morning now! EM'd one of my coworker/friends who's also on the board. She decided to take the stairs & made it her floor too!

I love it!
When I traveled in China several times a year, it seemed like every showroom I visited was on the 4th or 5th floor of a building with no elevators (not even freight elevators). I had to rest on every landing while my silm Chinese business associates tapped their feet and waited for me.
A few months ago, I had an appointment on the 3rd floor of our local hospital, and the elevator wasn't functioning. In the old days, I would have trudged about a mile to find another elevator, but that day I was able to just walk up the stairs and didn't even break a sweat.
