I was really dedicated for the first 10 days, only cheat was one bite of my sons cheeseburger.. Then, I went to my final Dr appt., surgery is monday the 29th, and found out I lost 16 lbs.. I never got my final dinner, so I went to Golden Corral, and had about 2 bites of everything that I love......I feel a little guilty, but am more worried that the Dr. will know I failed.....Does anyone know if they really know when you cheat, other than by your weight loss???????????????

I do not know about whether they can tell or not.  Remember though, the pre-op diet is for you safety during surgery.  I know you are not the first, or the last for that matter, that cheats on the pre-op diet.  Just get back on track to make sure everything is safe and sound for surgery.  Good luck to you on surgery day!  I am sure you will be as happy as I am with my band!

Assuming you don't "love" 50 food items you're probably o.k. but Christie is right, the pre-op diet is prescribes to shrink your liver so they can easily access your stomach during surgery.  Get back on track  this weekend and you should be fine.

I also had the "last supper syndrome" pre op, and went a little crazy trying to eat all of my favorite foods that I thought I wouldn't be able to eat anymore.  But I'm here to tell you, it wasn't necessary because you will still be able to eat most of your favorites post op if you CHOOSE to.  I willingly gave up rice, bread and pasta, but am still able to satisfy my cravings for Mexican, Chinese and Italian foods.  You just slightly adjust your choices depending on you level of restriction.  So don't worry.

Whatever you do, don't cheat on your post op diet.  That's where it's most critical to follow your surgeons prescribe food progression because you can do damage advancing your diet to quickly.  You need to eatl properly so the band stays in position while it heals.  I did liquids for 3 weeksand mushies for 2 wks and I made it!  You will too!

Best wishes on your surgery Monday!

Yes, your surgeon may be able to tell that you cheated. If you cheat on your pre-op diet, your liver will probably be larger and more slippery, therefore hard to maneuver without damaging it. That doesn't necessarily mean that your surgeon will back out of your surgery, and some surgeons don't require a pre-op diet at all, but sticking to the diet will reduce the risk of damaging your liver while your band is placed.

Well from what I have read I thought it was so your LIVER would get smaller as they pull it to the side when doing the lapband!

I do not believe they can tell. My Dr didn't have a pre-op diet, the night before I ate at my fav restaurant, pigged out. LOL
I would try and stick to the diet, from now on. Some Dr's like to shrink your liver before, that is the whole reason for the pre-op, from what I've heard. It makes it easier to operate.
Good luck on your WLS! Keep us posted.

I'm sure you have had your surgery by now!  I'm late reading the posts.  BUT I wanted to mention that Carb consumption will keep the Liver from shrinking.  The surgeon will know if you cheated IF your liver is not smaller - and he will know that you consumed carbs.  A true Liver Shrinking diet doesn't care about calories or fats. - it only limits your carbs.
I had a friend who cheated and ate french fries.  Her liver was large and the surgeon just closed her back up and sent her home without a LapBand.
