OT Hawaii
Plan on spending twice what you normally would on each meal. I was in Oahu and the Big Island a year and a half ago and remember paying $9 for a 6" sub at Subway and I am pretty sure that was the cheapest meal I had while there. I felt really sad because I spent so much on food and wasted a lot of it.
Enjoy your holiday!

Ahh... I was just in Hawaii this time last week!!!! first ever trip there. We flew into Honolulu & then took a cruise around the islands, so I did not need to pay for food.
For you food, I agree with another poster - plan for about twice what you normally spend & you should be okay.
Locals teased me (got to know them pretty well when they helped get our rented convertible out of the sand we got stuck in - long & funny story) that I should not have lost weight as their tradition is for "fluffier" women (does not correspond with what we saw on beach :-)
Anyhow, the three days we were not on the cruise, the food was pretty expensive at the store & at the restaurants - especially if you're ordering your own plate. If you have a place for leftovers & a stove to reheat them (avoid microwaves - too chewy), then ask for to-go boxes. We went to Cheesecake factory for salads a few weeks before our trip. Then when we landed, we were so tired & there was no line at the Cheesecake Factory in Waikiki. I knew I could get something appropriate to eat there so we just had dinner there. We were stunned when we saw the price difference for the same items we'd had on the mainland.
But there was something so much more yummy about eating it there in Hawaii than in Oregon.
. Other things you may spend money on would be memorabilia (find the Kmart or Walmart - cheaper than the ABC stores), BOTTLED WATER (don't forget to get enough liquids - especially if you splurge on any alcohol) is definitely twice the price of here in Oregon - maybe even a little more. Don't skimp on your water though. Floaties & beach stuff? Good prices as the ABC stores & there's an ABC store every time you turn around. Pack your suncreens before you go - the stuff you'd find in your home town that costs $8 to $10 will be anywheres from $18 to $30 in Hawaii.
All in all? If I had to do it over again? I'd be headed back out first thing in the morning.
Aloha!!!!!
