3 weeks out/revision from band to bypass: experience

Hi All!  As most of you know that I had problems with the band and revised to bypass.

Let me say, it is totally different!!! Recovery is harder.

I can't tolerate liquids much unlike the band.

Smell of food, etc., makes me want puke.

Looking at food at grocery stores makes me want to puke.  I can't tolerate much food, loved aidell's chicken pineapple teriyaki meatballs, and I pureed it and bleeeeecchhhh!!!!! The food I can usually tolerate pretty good is pureed canned chicken breast with a couple dollops of mashed potoates and chicken gravy, and tuna with mayo, and turkey mini meatloaf muffins with mashed potatoes on top (found at Trader Joe's).

I'm hardly hungry unlike band and loving it but I know it won't last forever.

I get really full quickly and won't eat again for like 5-6 hours sometimes 8 hours  yikes because I am simply just not hungry.

I'm just feeling depressed that I am having hard time tolerating liquids, my surgeon did say the first month is the toughest, but to hang in there and it will get better.  I can't stand water, even flavored water except for two flavors of Kirkland Costco water (Mango and raspberry green tea) even I can't chug it, I have to sip sip sip which is really hard and not like the band.   I bought SOBE drink (sugarless flavored water) on way to my parents, and only had 3 sips,,, ew! Blech!

I had to go to the urgent care on 9th because I chugged water too fast and i was throwing up fluids and thought i was done until I woke up at 4 am with fluid throwing up in my mouth so I had to go to urgent care, luckily my surgeon was on call, and I had slight inflammation due to tubing, etc.  Had to have CT scan, etc but all shows great and think it was just the fluids that I drank too fast.  I spent 12 hours there because I had post op appt that same day in the same building so they kept me there until it was time to see my surgeon.

I am now down to 185 lbs from 203 at surgery day.  I am still tired, but slowly and surely recovering.

Just wanted to share!

246 in Dec 2008 before banded 1/28/09 at 215 lbs, band crapped 9/09 at 170 lbs and struggled with it and regained to 203 revised to bypass on 8/1/11 and am very happy.

Sorry it's rougher than you had hoped. I know the first few months can be a bear but pretty soon it'll get better. At least you are losing now so that helps some. Hope it gets better soon and continue to keep us posted!

Congratulations on your revision Cheryl.   Yes RNY is totally different from lap band and YES you do have to sip.   Remember to not drink with you food also.   Follow the 30 minute before and after rule.   You will eventually get to enjoy the foods that you did prior to your surgery but in much smaller portions and also....your hunger pains may NEVER return.   I am almost 6 yrs. post op RNY and trust me...I am never hungry.    Let me give you a little advice though.    You need to eat every 2 or 3 hours  ( just a little bit of food ) to keep your metabolism up and going.     That is why most surgeons tell you to eat 5 - 6 mini meals.   Good luck on your new journey and don't get discouraged.   You are in for the ride of your life !!!

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

Cheryl,

A former coworker of mine who had RNY mentioned also had the difficulty tolerating the smell and even the sight of food. I don't know if she still has that problem.

On the plus side, if you've lost 18 pounds already, you're going to get to your goal weight fast!

Hang in there!

Jean

Congrats on your revision!!  I am sure that things will get better as you learn how to live with RNY.  Please don't let yourself get dehydrated......do your best to get your liquids in.  Good luck and keep us updated!!

Aw... hugs.

I'm sorry to hear you're having a rough time. I think it's possibly harder for you than a first time RNY-er cause you had the band and might have expected recovery to be similar and as you see, it's not.

Take care of yourself and keep drinking protein if you can, cause not eating for 8 hours isn't good for anyone.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us and please keep telling us how it goes.
