Nutrition Info for New Banders

My surgery is scheduled for Sept 6 and I have done a lot of research on the pre and post diet requirements for the band procedure. Some of this information I have received from members of this forum (thank you!) and other info I have researched or learned from friends who have had the procedure. If you are going on a liquid protein diet pre surgery and a clear liquid diet post surgery I have found some protein supplements that look promising. I added the internet url links so that you can view the product but I have found all of these items at both GNC and Nutrition Depot. Also, www.bodybuilding.com has information on hundreds of products that you may find useful. They even have the option to pick your protein powder based on: how much sugar they contain, how much protein they contain, and how many calories they have. I hope this helps - now I have a game plan!

Good information!  Just make sure that you choose Whey protein, (unless you have issues with wheat), because it absorbs into your system better so you get the full benefit.

Good luck as you start your journey.

and it worth noting that for the people who don't like protein shakes and have not been told by their docs that they must have them, it is very easy to make a natural high protein soup using protein rich foods like chick peas! Just add cooked veggies, liquid and blend to the correct consistency.

That way you can get all the protein you need naturally and with the taste of your choice.

Thanks so much for the info Kate! I was wondering about making some homemade soup and putting it in the blender. I haven't tried chick peas but I'm willing - now is the time to make changes! I know that I will be looking for other ways to get my protein other than shakes. Have a great day :)

Melissa,

I like the GNC Metabolic 60.  It has 95 calories per scoop and I think somewhere around 2-3 grams of sugar.  It also has 20 grams of protein per scoop.  The Nectar products are all decent but I am not fond of the too sugary ones and frankly the smell just gets me.  But those are about 23-24 gms of protein per serving as well.

Be very careful about the amount of protein per serving.  Our bodies are only able to absorb so much at a time, I think around 25 gms (not for sure).  Anything more requires the kidneys to work too hard and that is never good.

Good luck on your surgery!

Thanks Donnamarie! I was wondering how much protein (at a time) was too much. Some of the powder I have found was really high in protein and I knew that too much was bad for my kidneys. I will try the GNC Metabolic 60 and see if I like it - it's always good to hear from a forum member what powders taste the best. Have a great day :)

The Optimum Pro powder that I found has 60 g of protein (2 scoops). I was thinking bc I wouldn't be eating much at a time I would probably only use 1 scoop and make a small shake. I'm still new at this and have much to learn from you guys - I guess I will catch on to the tricks after surgery :)
