Am I too tight after first fill
Hi All,
I had my surgery on July 7, and I had my first fill on Wednesday. I did not ask the doctor how much he put in. I did tell him that I had some restriction already without a fill. I could eat 1/2 cup of mushies and feel very full. I was on liquids for Wednesday and Thursday. I had alot of hunger and when I drank my protein or liquid, I had pain, but I assumed it was because my stomach was so empty.
Friday and today, have been on mushies. After I eat, I get this tight feeling in my throat. I have had a sore throat since the fill. Today I started having a burning feeling in my throat after only a few bites.
I talked with the nurse on Friday and she seem to think that I was eating a bite or two too much. I disagree because I measured my food and I am only eating 1/4 cup at a time. I told her I am still hungery after that and she told me it could be head hunger. Again, I kinda of disagree because I get sick at my stomach when it is empty.
I am going to hold on through the weekend and hopefully get to see my surgeon next week. Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you,
Michelle

It does sound as if you are a bit too tight. Actually, you probably did not need a fill yet, anyway, since it seems as if you were just about right before this fill. My surgeons office uses the criteria of; able to eat 3-4 oz. of dense protein, not mushies, and remain without true hunger for 4-5 hours, 1/2 cup of food is about right. If you get hungry outside of those parameters you may need a fill, so that is one way for you to judge.
If you have difficulty swallowing liquids, or vomiting over the weekend call their emergency contact right away. Otherwise, unless it loosens up over the weekend, call them for an unfill on Mon. Unless this loosens up I would not try any very solid foods, you may get really stuck. In the meantime, sipping hot liquids before trying to eat is often helpful.
You did well following your fill by following their directions. This is very important and you can give yourself credit for doing so. It isn't easy after just following the post op diet.
You know your body better than anyone else, so don't let the nurse tell you what you should feel. You might try to use Prilosec or something to ease the burning if it becomes uncomfortable. Watch also for coughing or heartburn at night.
If you have more questions, just ask.

It sounds as if you are too tight - perhaps your doc could take out half of what he put in, but some people don't need any fill at all until the have lost a lot of weight. If you are only eating 1/4 of a cup, then you are not eating a bite too much!
But it is also possible that you need time to earn how to eat. Are you really chewing? Avoiding known difficult foods?
If eating hurts, something is not as it should be.

I have been eating mushy foods such as egg salad, refried beans, and tuna salad. I am going to try and eat more slowly next time I eat to see if that helps. I have lost a total of 54 lbs. I lost 37 pounds doing a six week pre op all liquid diet and I have lost 18 lbs since my surgery on July 7. I think I would feel better if I had a slight unfill, it may be a mind thing, but I just don't feel right. Before the fill, I was feeling almost normal again and eating 1/2 cup at each meal.
Just to say, I did not mean any disrespect to my doctor's nurse in the above post. I value her opinion just as I do all of yours. I don't like to sound mean..lol.
Thanks,
Michelle

I agree you are too tight I would ask your doctor to due a slight unfill as soon as possibel You should never have a sore throat after a fill. I had a complete un fill 3 months ago due to tighting in my chest. I also developed a sore throat at that time. I asked my doc if the band could affect your throat or sinuses because when my band tighted (with out a new fill) I had problems with both. he said no but I totally dis agree I have a band and I know how I was feeling. Both problems went away after the un fill (my choice). I have made an appointment on the 17th and I am going to ask him to due some test and check the band. Please dont wait out a tight band. You know how you are feeling and you know when things don't feel right. Hope you get relief soon

Michelle,
I agree with Debbie why would your doctor even give you a fill if you are satisfied already ? that makes no sense to me , I would have been no thanks doc I dont need a fill this time around.
You dont have to get a fill every time you see your doc :o)
As far as only eating 1/4 cup of food at a time to me that is very unhealthy and you need to be eating at least a cup of food per meal .
My doc if you cant eat 1 cup of food per meal 1/2 cup of protein already cut up , 1/4 cup of veggies , and 1/4 cup of carbs or if you dont want the carbs eat another 1/4 cup of vegges . If you cant eat that much food he will take saline out of you . He does not like us eating anything less then 1 cup of food per meal and he like us to have snacks also .
Just be careful . You dont want to be to the point that you are not eating enough food , that can be just as unhealthy as eating to much food :o)
