When Good News Is Bad News

I was encouraged by one of my dear friends to post this on the LapBand Forum.  I put this in my OH Blog, but, I thought I would share it here also.

Well....okay, not really BAD news, just not an explanation to my woes.  I went to see my PCP today, whom I LOVE dearly!!  He had my blood test results to go over with me.  I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes when I was 29 years old.  I struggled with that, and was scared to death the first year.  I was so young.....diabetes??  REALLY???   I went on Atkins and lost 70 pounds and my blood sugar was really good.

I feel off the low carb wagon, and regained all of my weight, plus some, of course.  My blood sugar got pretty much out of control.  My doc put me on two meds then, and even while taking those, my numbers usually stayed above 200.  That was when I de****d I needed a MAJOR intervention and looked in to getting my lapband.

I was able to go off all of my meds after losing about 40 pounds.  I was very happy with that.  During my LapBand journey, I eventually lost 105 lbs.  When I experienced a band slip along with major life stresses I fell in to bad habits and let myself regain 40 pounds back.  I have struggled SO MUCH to try and lose those 40 pounds again, and have lost some, but have been feeling like a failure because, although I have been working hard, I can't seem to get back to where I was.

So, this blood test I had was my yearly A1C tests.  My doc came in to the exam room, beaming.  He was so proud to say that my A1C was 5.9.  He said that basically, I am no longer diabetic.  Yay!!!  That is good news!  He asked me what I had been doing different.  I told him that I had really been exercising a lot.  He implored me to keep it up because it was working.

He went over the rest of the tests.  ALL of my numbers were good.....Cholesterol, a myriad of other tests and the "bad" news.....yes, my thryoid is very healthy along with the rest of me.  ha ha ha ha.

So, my thyroid is NOT to blame for my very slow weight loss.

My doc pointed out that in the last year since I have seen him, I have lost 10 pounds.  I know that I have gained muscle weight since then, also....so, I have probably lost maybe 15 pounds of fat or so?   So, hey.....I guess I can't whine too much.  My doc also pointed out that medical experts would MUCH rather see an overweight person that gets a lot of good exercise in, rather than a skinny person that is not active.

He said that some bodies can settle at an "overweight" weight and still be very healthy.....and for proof he pointed again to my blood test results.  Okay.....well, that doesn't mean I am giving up.  I am not.....I intend to lose a lot of my flab, it just might take me longer than I hoped.  I guess that's okay.  Being this healthy, I will hopefully have many many years to get there!  ha ha ha ha

I have taken up jogging this past month.  I am up to 30 minutes / 2 miles on the treadmill now.  I have never been able to jog in my life, so I am very proud of this accomplishment.  I am hoping to be able to transfer this to the great outdoors and eventually enter in to 3 and 5k's.  If it weren't for my band, I know that I would never be at this point......so, no matter how much my band frustrates me at times, over all I am so much better off having my band, rather that struggling without a tool.

Melly,

That is wonderful news about your labs !!! Losing weight, being skinny, or even just getting to goal  is not everything all the time just having healthy blood work is more important. You have saved yourself from sugar problems, heart attack problems, strokes and so on .

You have alot to be proud of .  And there is so many people that just lose slow . It dont matter how much you exercise,  how well you eat , it's our body types there is just nothing we can do about it but go with the flow.  I have to tell myself that all the time :o)

Keep up the great work Melly !!!

I agree, that having my health is much more valuable than being able to wear my size 10 jeans again, but I want both!!  ha ha ha

Thanks, as always, for your support!!

Thanks, Kate!!  I have kept my avitar that was taken at my lowest weight, for a couple of reasons.  One to inspire me, and another so that people recognize me.  ha ha

Here is a pretty recent picture of myself....although I down a couple of pounds since this was taken

Congrats on the A1C!  WooHOOOO
AND jogging up to 30 minutes is something to be very proud of!  Earlier this year I changed my weight goal to a higher number. I decided that since all my blood work was normal and I felt great and I was exercising, that the number on the scale wasn't the only thing to determine success.  I don't look skinny, I just look "normal"! hahaha  I am learning to accept that I am okay just the way I am now!  It's starting to sink in and it feels great!

Keep up the great work!  I'm proud of ya!

Hugs,
Kristi
