Post Band removal - still in ton of pain
I am sorry to hear about your pain. I hope that you find some type of relief soon. I do not know how they left the tubing in port in. Do they attach the tubing somewhere? I read on here a long time ago that a lady was having a lot of pain when ever she would sit and move around. She finally went to the doctor and her tubing had detached from the band and wa****ting her insides. After she had it fixed she said it was immediate relief.
Did they rule out Gall Bladder? Your pain sounds very familiar to what I experienced when I had an infected GB. I suffered stupidly for years with Gall stones becuase I never took the time to have the GB removed as recommended and ended up in emergency surgery because of my stupidity.
Make sure they check the Gall Bladdar.
I also had ovary pain and from an enlarged uterus and had that removed last October. It's been fantastic not having to deal with that pain!
I can't imagine why leaving the port and tubing in would cause pain, but who knows?!
I'm praying that they find the answer and your pain issues are resolved fully!
Best,
Lisa O.

Hi allQuick recap, I had my (slipped) band removed in an emergency surgery on 7/12. When the operation took place the surgeon found the band had adhered itself to part of my liver. They had to dissect it out which was an operation that lasted just over 4 hours. He removed ONLY the band, left in the port and tubing. When I asked him why he left it in, he said in case I wanted the band back at a later day it would be much easier to just reconnect the tube/port if already in place.
I've had nothing but pain since surgery. Not surgical pain, just pain. It's everywhere in my abdomen. I followed up with surgeon, and with GI, PCP and GYN. No one can agree where the pain is coming from. I've been on 2 antibiotics and have had a total of 3 ct scans, one ultrasound, and 2 upper GI series. Nothing can be seen on these tests that is wrong.
I have requested that the port and tubing be removed. Number one, my insurance will not cover it to be replaced. I have since changed insurance companies from when I first had the band put in (Dec 2007), and WLS is not covered. They covered the removal of the band because it was an emergency. I now am waiting to hear if they will cover the remaining pieces to come out.
I was just in the ER again today with this excruciating lower right quadrant pain that I was convinced was either my appendix or an ovary. Neither. The ER doc said they can't tell me what it is but that it could possibly be referred pain from port/tube, more scar tissue, endometriosis (I've had in the past), or GI related. I don't know what to do at this point. I am at a loss of words. I cannot walk upright, I cannot bend, I cannot twist, I cannot do ANYthing w/out this awful pain.
Is it possible that the left behind port/tube could be causing ALL of this pain in my abdomen, including LRQ pain? I cannot tell you in words how frustrated and depressed I am since surgery. Nothing is feeling right and I have never had so much pain in my entire life, not even child birth. I don't know what to do...
Any similar experiences? My surgeon doesn't feel it's related - so I'm a little nervous the second surgery to remove the rest of the pieces wont' be covered...
It is totally possible that it is coming from your port and tubing. Tubing migrates and moves around. I recall one guy that his excess tubing was not shortened during surgery and it migrated to his colon and was free floating in his colon. I have photos of his colonoscopy if you want me to find them.
Adhesions are another possibility and would not show up on the diagnostics you have had. Some people just make lots and lots of scars. You can literally open someone up, place your hand on top of their intestines and in six months go back in, open them up again and you can see a handprint of scarring on the intestines. Those scars/adhesions push and pull on 'stuff' and cause pain.
I can tell you that if it were me I would have the port and tubing removed, they 'might' be able to see adhesions. This is a simple surgery and they may just open up your port incision and be unable to see possible adhesions but they can go deeper and look if they want to.

Hi all
I posted last week or maybe it was week before about all my problems recently regarding my band and how the band itself was reomved 7/12/11. They left the port/tube in thinking I may want the band put back in later. (long story behind all of that, I didn't want it left in if the band needed to come out, but anyway...)
The Surgeon was not cnnvinced the tube and port were still the source of my abdominal pain. I was, however, certain it had to do with both being left in. Three weeks after the band came out, the port and tube came out (yesterday) after I requested that it be removed.
I feel 100x better, I have ZERO abdominal pain aside from incision soreness. I haven't felt this great since mid June. I"m walking, I'm eating, I have no pain... I am so happy. :)
I just wish that it had been taken care of weeks ago when this all first started. I'm quite angry with my surgeon regarding the whole scenario. I've had five ER visits, 3 ct scans, 2 upper gi series, 1 pelvic ultrasound, 1 transvaginal ultrasound and 2 surgeries, all in a months time. All of that was unnecessary. If they had just listened to their patient as a patient vs a $, I would've been good to go when it all started. But at least it seems to be up side now.
Thank you all for your responses and experiences. I will never again get the lapband. I am thankful for that it's helped me accomplish but don't think it's worth the risk (for me) to get it put back in now. I've had too many difficulties with it and am nowhere near needing it at this point anyway. (155 lbs now, v 309 at surgery). What a crazy month it's been...
