Menstration and Weight Gain

Hi,

I just wanted to know if anyone had the same problem; my daughter gained about 80 pounds and her period has been gone for 2 years now.  The doctors have not found anything wrong with her.  She had test after test and nothing.  One doctor told her you have to loose weight.  So she got the Lap-band and has lost 30 pounds since Jul, but no period.  Will her period come back?  I am very worried and help pay for her Land-band in order for her to loose the weight and get healthily again.
Just wanted to know if this happened to anyone and they got their period after loosing the weight?

Thanks

I had issues with my period for several years before my band surgery.  I have been birth control pills to regulate my periods.  I have just the opposite problem...my periods are heavy and long.  Ever since I started the BC pills it has been better.  The heavy periods are caused by a large fibroid tumor.  The doctor told me if I lost weight the tumor would shrink and my periods would get better.

Fast forward 2 1/2 years.  I have lost a total 150lbs and have more to go, but lost most of the weight I needed to lose.  I still have heavy periods and still need the BC pills.  I am now being told that with excessive weight loss comes a release of hormones that have been stored in your fat.  So it could take a awhile longer before my periods go back to "normal".

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it will take more than 30 lbs to make a difference in your daughter.  I also think that the medical field tends to blame everything on obesity.  I'm not completely convinced that my problem will be fixed after I lose all my weight.

I wish your daughter luck with her problem.

Thank you for your response but if you have a large fibroid I would see another doctor.  It really should be removed.  I had one and they removed it.

I was told by two doctors in order to remove it they would destroy my uterus, so I would have to have a hysterectomy.  I don't want one, so my doctor is trying everything he can to save my uterus.  Which I appreciate.

Rosie514, you don't say how old your daughter is. She may be gone into early  menopause (can happen as young as 30). I would advise her to see a different gynaecologist for a second opinion.

Hi Cat,

My daughter is 26 and her period went away at the age of 24.... sorry but no manopause.  She has gone to three different doctors and they all said the same thing.
