Finally went back to OA !!!

Before I had my surgery, I tried all kinds of diets and weight loss programs. Then I discovered the recovery program Overeaters Anonymous based on the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. There I realized I had  a disease of addiction and that I'm a sugar addict.

Long story short, I have been eating more unhealthy "sweets" also known as slider foods that go down easier than "healthier" food choices. I realized my addiction to sweets has picked up because I don't get that "dumping" feeling or get sick from eating sweets.

The surgery is just a tool. I still need to "recover" from being a food addict and compulsive overeater. Then band helps but is only 1 tool in my belt. I need much help and support and arrest this beast within a day at a time.

I'm grateful for my band and for the recovery based programs out there...including this site as a wonderful tool so I can share openly.....and I know I will not be judged here!

Thanks!
Suzanne

I am a food addict of all types.  After surgery I was real good with what I ate-now I find I can have a little of this and some of that.  Not good.  I think changing my mindset and how I eat are going to be the hardest hurdles to face.  Eating smaller portions no big deal-the band aides in that-but what I put in my mouth to feel what I felt before is a huge hurdle.  Clearly I wouldn't be here if a carrot gave me the same satisfaction as banana cream pie or whatever.  Just one of the  many obstacles that we need to learn how to weave through.  Havent hit that aha moment, and maybe I won't..but I'd sure like to.  Seems like you and I have the same HW and GW.  Good luck with OA-I've gone, and though it works wonders for many, maybe my mindset wasn't ready...I made many great friends there and had some success, but not what I called "success".  If anything I had some good memories and lectures and friends from OA.  Good luck!!!

Good for you! The band only helps the physical part but the mental part is the real killer. I hope it helps you to gain better control over your eating. I know lots of folks find it very helpful.

Suzanne,
I see a counselor on a regular basis, she deals with Eating Disorders. So many people think that WLS is a final stopping destination. WHat I have found is that this surgery has left me to face my food addiction issues.

I just posted about Emotional Eating, something I keep posted at work and home. Its yet another tool to keep on hand.
