I have been very excited about getting the lap band . Over the past few days I have ready alot of your post about things going wrong , yall got me scared! My surgery should be in late feb. early march. I have done so much research and went to seminars and am learning everything in my power. The things they dont tell you is the things most of you post that happens afterwards. I dont want to get this and it not work , I need to get the weight off , my 1 kidney needs the fat gone! Any help and truthfull ness about the band would help me greatly , I want all the bad , and good . I would rather know ahead of time , then have someone sugar coat it , and then it bite me in the ass . I dont want to have a kidney transplant by the time im 30. Any thing you can let me know will be greatly appreciated .

Hi Donna Marie,
I, for one, am extremely happy with my band.  I'm 4 months out and have had no problems.  It has been alot of hard work, but I'm proud to say I've lost just over 75lbs so far.

I'm sure you will hear lots of different opinions and stories.  All I'll tell you is this: In my opinion, you should take everything you read with a grain of salt.  You should put your faith in your surgeon and do all the research you can.  There are risks with any surgery.  For me, I decided it was a risk worth taking to finally lose weight and be healthy.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Donna,

Any WLS you have done can have complications. I can tell you stories about each surgery out there expect for the DS I do not know anybody personally with that surgery so I can not make no comments .

There is no 100% risk free, complications free surgery out there, if there was then there wouldn't be so many different surgeries out there.

I love my band and I have done extremely well with it ,  I dont even have no fills in my band I just refuse to let food control me anymore enough was enough , but this is how I work my band everybody is different on how they do things .

I could revise to the sleeve tomorrow and have terrible complications from the surgery or the gastric.

Nobody knows what will happen to the person, what could happen to the person till they have the surgery done .

All I can say is just because people have complications with the band dont mean you will though.  You could be just like me and not have a single fill and knock the weight off , or you might need many fills, or you could have a band slip in 6 months who knows or I could lose my band tomorrow.  Only God himself knows the answers to these questions.

Take the time to do your research and do what is best for YOU.   It dont matter what everybody thinks or says , if you feel like the sleeve is the best surgery then get it done, if you feel like the band is for you get it done , just do the surgery that is better for you not by what everybody says, its your life ,  and your body not ours or the docs .

The most important thing I tell post-ops is that it's a lot of work.  I know you may have heard this already and you're nodding your head and saying "I know".  So let me tell you again- having a band is A LOT OF WORK.  YOU control what you eat, and how much, and how often you exercise.  The band does not make you lose weight, doesn't make you sick if you eat the "wrong" food, doesn't usually work right after surgery.  This is a tool that requires you to have patience, and to have determination, and you need to be willing to work really hard in order for it to work.

It's like being on a diet with a bit of help.

Donna,

You are just like me :o) I was never a chips eater, carb eater and sweets eater. My gosh the only time I really eat them things is when its that time of the month and then I crave them things , other then that I have Doritos, pints of ice cream, cupcakes sitting here in my house and I dont touch the stuff , I have no desire to eat them kind of foods thank goodness lol.

I think that is why this has been easier on me because I was never ate that kind of food before the band so not eating them foods after I got the band has been no big deal to me at all.

The only problem I had was a fast food junkie  pizza mainly and I had no clue  how to control my portions at meal times that was my biggest downfall and not getting off my lazy butt to exercise .

That is one of the biggest reasons why I havent gotten no fills.  I was just never a snacker that I felt like I  had to eat 24 hrs a day.  I could go hrs and hrs of not eating before the band especially in the summer time , but once again when it came back to meal times and I did eat , I made up for it lol.., or I would order a pizza and eat more then half of it with a large sub .

I think personally with your eatig habits you would do just fine with the band , you remind me alot of myself .
