Are you saying you have pain all the time now?
It's the dang diaphragm, I tell ya. The band can't help but irritate it in a lot of people and it causes the Vagus nerve system to go crrrrazy, causing the pains you mention.

When you look at the photo, it's like, "How could it NOT irritate the diaphragm?"

The diaphragm is thin and membranous and moves constantly with every breath. The band is across the top portion of the stomach, so it's pretty mu*****onstant contact with the diaphragm and parts of the esophagus.

You did have surgery very recently, so hopefully the pain will subside the further out you are. BUT, if it doesn't, please, please, please get checked to make sure your band is in the correct position. If it STILL insists on hurting, remember that your long term health is very important. You don't want lingering pain because it becomes chronic pain more often than not.

I truly hope you feel better soon. Let me know if I can help you.

I'm so happy to read this post. I was banded last year. Recently I had a complete unfill and just had the first re-fill Monday. I forgot the discomfort I feel when eating. I'm trying to readjust to the full factor/discomfort.

By the way Nicci, thanks for the post. I too have that diaphram discomfort. Hope if will subside pretty soon.

Also, I forgot that damn gas pain. Ugh!!!!!

Hi Lapbanddiva,

If the discomfort doesn't go away in a week or so, you might be a smidge too tight, ya know? Hopefully it will subside as the swelling goes buh bye.

When I was at the height of pain with my band, the chronic pain clinic spoke of doing a nerve block for me. I asked where they would do the block... the diaphragm? And the doctor said, "Well, not if you'd like to keep breathing."  I was like, "Oh. Duh. I suppose that's not the greatest idea I ever had!"  I never gave a thought to my diaphragm before the band.

Feel better!

Please let your surgeon know about this.  I guess I'm lucky, because I have never had any pain other than post op from the band.  When I'm hungry my stomach growls just like before.  I don't over eat, I eat my 3 oz of meat and have a 1/4c of a veggie etc. I don't want to stretch my esophagus or upper pouch.

I hope your pain resolves!

No. This is not how it should be. Pain should be the exception, not the norm. I am particularly confused by feeling pain when hungry!

I only ever feel pain on the very rare occasions when I get something stuck. And that never lasts more than a few minutes.

IMO this needs a visit to your doc.

I had an off and on pain under my left rib (port on other side) that was sharp, stabbing. I had every test and nothing showed. It wouldn't matter even if I hadn't eaten.
Some people on here have had the same peoblem and attributed it to the band and the vagus nerve.
I had the band out Monday and no more pain. Go figure....

HMMM.. lost my 'quick reply' i believe...
Wanted to say thank You to everyone *****plied, I love that I can get such quick answers on here! I did call my surgeon, and the nurse was great- she explained that during my surgery I had a hiatal hernia repair and that the discomfort would be temoporary and resolve in a few weeks.  I am hoping that the rest of my journey is positive and uneventful (my lips to Gods' ears!)

Tahnk again!
