Struggling With Should I Eat Breakfast Even If I'm Not Hungry

this has bothered me for a while now.

I've been eating breakfast for a long time now.(around 9:30ish-10:00)   However, I'm really not hungry when I do eat and would prefer to wait until 11:30.  However, you hear so much about how important it is to eat breakfast in the mornings.

Thoughts?

TIA

I feel that you should always have breakfast so that you don't fall behind on your proteins for the day.  Sometimes I would just have a protein smoothie of some sort and subsitute real food for that.

all the weight has been lost post-op..I LOVE MY BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

highest weight: 333 pounds (I know I gained after my last "weigh in" in the doctors office so probably it's more like 340 pounds)
current weight: 151 pounds (7/12/11)
I've been at goal (165 pounds) for 6 months now and now on maintence.  I tend to go up and down depending on time of the month and such!

While it seems contradictory, (because many bariatric professionals tell you to never eat if your not hungry), one thing every weight loss professional seems to agree on is the importance of eating breakfast.  My Surgeon's off ice recommends 30 grams of protein, (first thing in the a.m.), to jump start your metabolism.  Because bandsters are often tight in the a.m. that's one of the reason they allow shakes because you get the biggest bang for your buck if you can't eat eggs, etc. as another source of protein.  If you're going to drink liqid calories, make sure they count.  Choose a high protein shake with the lowest sugar and carbs you can find.  I take mine on the go because I have a commute, but I like the Atkins pre-made shakes, (mocha latte) is my favorite and then have a skinny latte when I get to work.  Between the shake and the skim milk in my coffee, I'm close to 30 grams of protein.

Good question, Sandra!

Would really like to hear other input on this also.  I'm not an oatmeal person (ick).  I'm getting pretty tired of eggs.  Protein shake is a good 'ol standby.

thanks for the good question!

I have never been a breakfast person. However I do always eat it now. My husband is diabetic and I was at his apt. with the RN that works with all the diabetics at the Drs. office. She was explaining to him how important it is to eat breakfast b/c after going so long without eating, the liver (or pancreas, I forget which) can sense the lower blood sugar level and start dumping sugar to make up for it.

Anyway it seemed to make sense and I thought it would be beneficial in terms of weight loss in general to start off with breakfast.

Good luck.

Sometimes I am so not in the mood to eat at that time either -- I do a protein coffee those times. It's skim milk, coffee and a scoop of unflavored unjury.

My nutritionist has told me that for lap-band patients, she doesn't mind if we don't eat breakfast, especially if you are really tight in the morning.  However, if you don't get any protein at breakfast, you still have to figure out a way to get the recommended amounts during the day.  I usually have some greek yogurt with a little fruit.  If I'm really not hungry, I will do a protein shake cause even if I'm not hungry, I'm usually thirsty.

Meal timing is irrelevant therefore eating breakfast isn't necessary. The important part is ensuring that you are meeting your protein and dietary fat goals at the end of the day. Eating at set times throughout the day has proven to have very little effect on weight-loss or this "metabolism" boost so many people speak of. It doesn't exist nor does breakfast boost your metabolism. Your body is highly adaptable and will work on the feeding schedule you provide it.

I do a 14 hour fast and eat my days calories within 8 hours because that's what works for me. I got tired of bringing all sorts of food to work and in the end I found that I'm not hungry until 10-11, so why eat any earlier? Eat when you're hungry; it really is that simple :)
