Colonoscopy and Menopause - Question for ladies please

Hello everyone. I was banded on April 20th and have lost about 35 pounds, including pre op loss. I have been in perimenopause for a few years, having periods every 3 months or so. I had my last period in January, and I was so excited to think that I was really finished this time for good.  Well, had a colonoscopy today (screening)  and when I got home, I discovered that I had started my period, after a 5 month reprieve.  Can the weight loss trigger this?  Did the colonoscopy trigger this? Or is it all totally unrelated? Thanks for any insight.

Our fat makes a form of estrogen (can't recall what it's called) and when we lose weight, our estrogen supply changes and our cycles can be whacko for a while.

No way of knowing for sure.  It could have happened if you hadn't had the weight loss, or the colonoscopy etc.  Or the procedure was stress on your body and triggered it.  Sometimes women with normal cycles will get their period after having any type of surgery.  I'm a RN.

Congrats on your 35 pounds!

Thanks, ladies. It just seems like such a coincidence. I guess I will never really know for certain.

It's doubtful that anything triggered your period, but it's possible. God knows, in my life I have had periods start a week early or two weeks late  for NO REASON whatsoever. It's just that our little "red headed friend" is psychotic and does what she wants.

You are so right, Bette! I am so bummed because I really thought I was done this time. Forty years is long enough! Oh well.

Several years ago, I had not had my period for 22 months and thought I was home free.  My weight went up over 300 pounds and I had my period for two months.  And they were the worse heaviest periods of my life.  Never had a period since then.  So much so that when I had surgery a few months ago and the anesthesiologist asked me when my last period was, I looked at her like I didn't know what she was talking about.  I was just happy that she thought I was young enough to have one!
