Average Weight loss on Lap band?

What are you revising from?

The average loss with the band is usually said to be 1 to 2 lbs a  week.  Thus some lose a lot faster and some a lot slower.  It's individual depending on food choices, exercise, starting weight and some other variables.

Personally, I lost about 4lbs a week at the beginning, but only after getting back on real food.  While I was in the refeeding healing stage, I lost maybe 2lbs.  I might could've lost faster, but I was very happy at that rate.

I started out at almost 400 lbs though.  Someone who starts smaller, will probably lose slower.  My first 100lbs came off in 7 months, with eating bandster meals and walking every single darn day for exercise.  The second 100 took about another 17 months and sweating at the gym, for a total of about 200 lbs in 2 years.

So, your goal for 20lbs a month, might be doable, but it might also be a bit over ambitious.  And when you lose that fast, you are also at risk for developing gall bladder issues.  And one more bit of information to chew on.. as you lose weight, the loss becomes slower.  Now that I'm 20 to 30 lbs from goal.. each lb is a big struggle to get off.  :)  But this is true with every WLS I think.. not just band.

I have no idea on the smallest size your stomach can get.. I'm not sure any of us here can answer that one.  I do read about people being satisfied on 1/2 cup of food.   I eat about 1 cup per meal and am satisfied for anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.

There are failures with every WLS.  Just do your research and decide which one is for you.  I'm glad I made the choice I did.

Edited for typos/misspellings.

when the band is placed, the stomach holds the quantity of about an egg. It can't be smaller than that or the esophagus has problems (unless you have a quack doctor). The band (depending on the band) can be filled to a point where it's only about the size of an aspirin (or slightly larger) (think hour glass: tighter the hole, the slower the sand flows.) the theory is that this "restriction" will slow down how quickly food goes through to the rest of the stomach. The problem is that if it's too tight, you can get more reflux or even inhale your stomach acids because they don't go through the hole, they come up the esophagus.
I am only 13 days post-op for band. So far, I'm losing about a pound a day. I don't expect that to continue (although it would be nice!). Like Lisa said, it depends on so many factors: starting weight, biology, previous weight loss (the more you lose, and the faster, the more your body wants to hold on to the weight), food selections and exercise, for example.
I wish you the best on your choice. I've been absolutely thrilled with my choice so far.

Has anyone lost more weight than that with a proper diet and exercise?

I have lost an average of 15-20 pounds a month but only because I invested in personal training and have changed my activity leverl completely. In all honesty, I am not as strict with the food choices as I could be. If I was I probably could lose more. I would say it depends on the individual. I believe the band is a tool and not an answer and I would say that it really shows in my results. If I paid more attention to better nutrition I could have lost more by now.

If you lost an average of 15-20 pound a month, that means you have lost a whopping 180-240lbs.  You say if you were more strict with food or if you paid more attention to better nutrition you could have lost more by now.  Woman you are being way too hard on yourself.  That is a riduculous amount of loss in such a short period.  Please be kind with yourself.

Charmaine I would suggest you read on the failed lap-band forum and also the revision forum. I am constantly seeing band failures. Mine has failed, and I would like to revise. I would just hate to see you (especially as a revision patient) choose a WLS with such low stats:

Wow, 20lbs per month !!!  That is a lot of pounds with any WLS or without.  You plan on eating very little and exercising like they do on the biggest loser - right?

If you are going to revise from the RNY, why not get the biggest and best gun, the Duodenal Switch?  Unfortunately, I'd say it is going to be a crap shoot for you otherwise.

Good luck!

I'm on month 3 of my weight loss. I'm averaging 11-13lbs per month. The doctor has been telling me I'm losing weight too fast. So.... 20lbs seems like too much
